Learn how to use the other functions besides the A+ mode so you don't look like a boner.

In all seriousness studying f-stop, iso, and exposure really help. Get a tri-pod.

this. you need experience. go out and shoot and play around with your settings. the camera is only as good as the photographer.

however, a good lens for a beginner thats really fun to fool around with is the Canon 50mm f1.8. its nice and cheap, but good for learning.

Buy books. For video, the Bare Bones Course is fucking awesome. It's super super super basic. It'll tell you a lot of what you may already know but it gives you great perspective on what motivates your decisions.

I never read books when I was starting out and I regret it because some of the fundamentals I taught myself ended up biting me a little bit when I started getting into more professional settings. Learning right will pay off.

Dont buy any glass yet. play with the kit lens. there is no point in buying more glass until you outgrow your current setup. figure out where the kit lens is holding you back before you invest in more glass.

do invest in a tripod though. something decent so you dont have to upgrade it again in the near future.
