Music that makes you dumb?

id say you choose the music you listen to based on your intelligence. why you think you see faggots in huge trucks listening to t-pain and souljaboytellem? cause theyre all fucking dumb.

Some studies also states that people who have played any sort of musical instrument throughout their childhood are better learners too.

But I guess there is a shitload of dumb-shits out there when Lil Wayne is last, and you compare that to how many listens to his music!

Well all the nerds that I know listen to classical music, and supposedly if classical music is played to cows then their milk is better.

i dont think there is there is a corelation between intelligence and taste in music. acording to this, smart people like the killers over pink floyd? fuck smart people then.

"Smart" is such an immensely broad term that using it in a "scientific" context just seems asinine.

Smart how? Musically? Anybody who started playing a musical instrument from an early age has better brain development in the areas that process learning and motor skills. Once that person grows older, they are able to instantly recognize whether or not a song has any musical depth or elegance to it, or if it's just another piece of shit with a heavy bass line.

To contrast, people who have no musical experience aren't going to tell the difference in musical composition between Lil Wayne and Dr. Dre/Parliament.

So in a sense, yes; stupid people listen to shitty music. So do smart people. Being "smart" or "stupid" has nothing to do with it. Musical comprehension is what matters.

I think you are contradicting yourself here, because this is completely a value judgement.

its not ironic just stupid, the test were done on adults and the effect of them having slightly increased brain activity only lasted 15 minutes.

Jimi Hendrix, a master of both guitar, and lyrics, was not in the top 10. He was one of the most creative artists of the 20th century, and Death Cab for Cutie is rated better? RUFKINGSRS? That's it. I got a 1960 on my SAT's. That's equivalent of about 1350 on the old SAT. Music is not a matter of intelligence, but personal taste. Every ear is different. Just because some nerdy faggot wants to listen to Beethoven doesn't mean that the music makes you smarter.

Fuck this guy. I am not going to participate in a society where Hendrix isn't allowed in the top 30. Fuck you all. I'm gonna go hang myself.

that survey is so wrong first of all. somehow beethoven is first but classical music is close to last, contradiction maybe? Also, Jazz is also wayy down on the list but a good friend of mine is an avid jazz player/listener, got a 2350 on the SAT's and has a 4.3 gpa. I conclude this false. except for the lil wayne thing that makes sense

a survey basing on plain data cant be "wrong". you could say that the samples/size/requirements to make a list are wrong, but not the data itself.

honestly, do you know a graduated person listening to lil john/wayne or whatever?? and the other way round, do you know a construction worker (nothing against them, really, i worship people that can work with their hands) that listens to classical stuff??

so for the main stuff, i think this survey gives a good overlook over the correlation between quality of your school/music taste.

some bands/genres might fall out of the context, but that just a characteristic of such a survey

It probably has a lot to do with the age of the listeners. Most of lil wayne's fans are 15 and your average beethoven fan is significantly older.

ya but only The Sun Rises in the East and his earlier stuff. his newer stuff lost the feel. compare You Can't Stop the Prophet to Murda1 and youll notice a big difference in his message. if you ask me, that whole album with Murda1 on it (cant remember which) wasnt made for the same reasons as his first works.

im surprised radiohead and phish are so high, mainly because 90% of the people who listen to them are also

I'm assuming that 97% of ns'ers don't listen to progrock. Don't just go dropping band names, it seems like your just trying to sound cool.

Let's play the look at the data game! This study has a few major flaws. Point number one, did anyone notice that the sample size for the bands ranges from 10 schools to upwards of 700 schools? We're looking at some major inconsistencies here... in addition, I haven't taken an in depth stat course, but doesn't it stand to reason that the adjusted average SAT scores should be different from the actual average SAT scores? While I think that this study was done pretty poorly, I think it's a good idea. However, I think the music you listen to and its relation to your intelligence is more of a class/social observation. I don't think 'smarter' people listen to classical music (whatever the highest one was) because they scored higher on the SAT, it's a reflection of the social aspects of his life and school he goes to etc. For example if his private school or whatever encouraged classical music listening at a young age it stands to reason that he would grow to like classical music and keep listening to it... if he started hanging out with kids that listen to T.I. but didn't get distracted from school he'd still be as smart, but would fall under the T.I. slot...

I have a feeling that didn't make sense

i heard that cows create more milk, or faster milk... or something to do with better milk when they have been listening to classical music like mozart and beethoven.

Yeah, There's a huge jazz program in band in my highschool. Only the best musicians can play in the jazz band and these people include some of the most intelligent kids in my school. In addition if you look at the improvisation in Coltrane's music (just an example), it is obviously a very educated style of music. Yet, it is almost at the bottom.

Most of the more intellectual people that i know listen to that shitty classical shit. now just because i dislike classical music does not make me unintelligent. I just prefer the sounds of phish and the dead to Motzart and Beethoven

Music effects your mood and keeps you focused. So if you're listening to something you don't like you become angry and you have trouble focusing but if you listen to something relaxing and you enjoy it, you have an easier time focusing. I prefer to listen to instrumentals if I need to focus and it turns out classical is mostly instrumental so guess what I listen to. I enjoy the "flow" of the music more so than any lyrics. Music with depth means more to me than what someone can say.

What I'm saying is that most popular music has hardly any musical depth to it. Maybe a few layers and a shit load of compression/equalizer work, but thats about it. I can see why people say classical music makes you use your brain harder because it's so much more intricate.

I know with some rap I can just turn off my brain and kind of half-listen and enjoy it, but the second I start paying attention to it in the same way I would with classical or blues, I can't stand it.
