Music Question regarding effects

I know there are pedals and boards and shit that you can plug into amps to mess with effects and whatnot, but are there software programs that do the same thing?

Are there Computer-to-Amp connectors that would allow me to adjust effects on my computer and hear a difference through my amp when i play?

theres a cable called the snakeskin that i use for guitar, plugs into usb, and can output pedal effects and stuff into my comp. i currently use garage band

I just looked into it realy quick and it looks like youd have to plug your patch cord into your mic input on your computer, which means youd need an adapter from your patch to standard headphone size to fit. regardless this looks like it would work

Most recording programs have effects for tracks. Even Garageband. You could essentially run your guitar straight through your computer with a converter cable, then back out of your computer with a converter into your amp.

yea, pretty much any audio program could do that.. my friend uses his computer as guitar amp.. and with most programs, like audition or something there are real-time effects.

but if you just have an integrated sound card in your computer the sound quality will suck

FYI: I play bass and i'm using a PC.

My 30W amp only has 3 EQ knobs and my bass has a tone adjustment knob, but I wanna mess with more effects and sounds so thats why I want to link it up through my laptop.

line6 toneport.

look into it.

i am an avid line6 supporter(had an XTL, now X3L), and you battery sniffing tone snobs, my tone probably sounds better than yours, and i have 100 times the versatility.

line6 ftw

pc programs contain the likes of:

sony's ACID

Audacity

Luna

Mixcraft

I would say ACID is the best, a bit hard to get used to and expensive.

i believe i have a copy of a cheeper version of that somewhere if you want it

so plus your bass into mic jack, run it through a program like audition to mess with sound... although there are programs especially for that, and headphone jack to amp input. and prepare for shitty sound quality unless you actually have a sound card or have an external sound card to plus into a usb port

Any suggestions for quality cords to connect my bass to my laptop? I only have USB and my Mic jack for inputs and i dont really want to buy a 3rd party soundcard since i'm not hardcore. Any suggestions would be dope though

Call me a snob, but I wouldn't recommend computer-generated effects. The authenticity of tones comes from the transistor types from traditional pedals (ex: the germanium transistor of the fuzz face) whereas the modeling generators are digitally rendered... I dunno I would just go with the real thing if I were you: analog, true bypass pedals. Nothing sounds better, unless you're using some high-end Cornish pedal with GOOD buffer.

A lot of it comes down to what you want to do with it. I generally use all analog gear and record via mic but then again, I already have that stuff for live shows. Line 6 is probably going to be your best friend if you just want to muck aorund. Something like the toneport will give you a very workable model.

Bump. I'm not buying pedals or anything of the like so don't bother recommending them. Any more recommendation for USB-connector cables to my laptop though?

if you google usb guitar cables and click on the guitar center or musicans choice links there are tons to choose from
