Music Licensing in am films

i'm just curious about films, such as beyond the bunny hill, jibopoly, quick and other ones like that who are selling their vids, if they've gotten their music licensed or if it's not really necessary
 
if you sell nothing no one cares!!

all it would take is one artist to get pissed and clean you out of everything you own

 
Not that i know much about it but when we put out a movie out a couple years ago, "Damaged Goods", we got verbal rights to all of our songs, and about a year or so after we premiered it the company that "owes" one of the songs demanded $$ for the use of it. We only made 500 copies and we probably to date have only sold about 250 and we did have verbal permission but none of that seemed to matter they demanded the discounted price of $50 for the use of the one song. According to the dick i talked to you have to have a written letter head for each song and usually that includes a nominal fee.

If you are a small company looking to get into this stuff just be careful and don't get in over your head. Odds are no one will ever say a thing but if the wrong person hears about your flick they will demand money. I think the best bet is to you local music or maybe even self made stuff bit its not real easy.

all am movies should atleast ask for permission, most smaller bands are excited to just let you put it in there movies! but its super respectable, and you wont have to deal w/ anything if you simply ask for permission
