MSU vs U of M

What is better in terms of skiing, campus life, and what do you need to be admitted gpa/ACT wise? Im did take a look at some online college stuff but didnt really get alot out of it and would hope to get some feedback from people who live there or attend either university. I currently live in Michigan and need to not live in Michigan in a nutshell. Thanks, hope someone can help me out.

Forgot to ask what mountains are close to either university/ how are the parks? Not really sure about much in Montana want to keep alot of options open for what college to go to since I dont have any idea of what I am going to major in. Thanks again.

everyone will say bozeman has better skiing, but it depends on what you want. both schools are easy to get into and it just depend what you are looking for. there are plenty of thread on this subject in the regional here. check them out

this is copied from another thread in this forum. link to thread. https://newschoolers.com/web/forums/readthread/thread_id/498002/

every single one will say the exact same things.

1.Claim: snowbowls park sucks. Fact: there is no park at the bowl. so therefore it can't suck. It also lacks groomed runs or grooming at all really. On the plus side there are very few little kids there, college freshmen in bright colors, or gapers. Snowbowl is for people who believe in "more carve less jib" style skiing and if they want to get gnarly aren't afraid to go there. The bar is also the greatest place in the world. period. anyone who disagrees I will fight.

2.Claim: Lost Trail is the greatest place in the world. Fact: LT puts on a decent park, gets pummeled with snow, and is pretty inexpensive. It's also so not steep in most places that it sucks if the snow gets too deep because you can't get speed. There is also a ton of families and small children there, and the percentage of freshman and highschool kids in bright colors is among the highest in the state.

3.Claim: Big Mountain is better. Fact: Big mountain in a lot of ways is better, it's got amazing terrain, deep snow and a solid park, and fast chairlifts. On the negative side the chairs are arranged in such a dumb manner that most of the time you spend skiing is run outs back to the chair instead of shredding top to bottom. That gets annoying as hell, and there is nothing to do in whitefish...

4. Claim: Move to Bozeman. Fact. Bozeman has a bunch of really big hills all located really close to it. It's also got the highest tourist content in Montana which kills coming to montana. Big sky is rad, but rocky and hella expensive, bridger is sick, but only the upper half, and it gets skied out quick. And MSU has way more dudes than girls, which is pretty lame, as well as the town which is geared a lot more around tourism than being a place to live. That might be fun for people under 25, but it gets old fast.

As you can see each place has its pros and cons. pick your style and run with it.

Look at what the colleges have to offer. Since that's why your moving in the first place. Msu is a much more science based college and u of m is a liberal arts school (in general for both of those). My huge advice is to pick a major before you start school. Don't do the university bull that I did. I got set so far back it not funny. And a huge waste of money.

Yeah Im going to pick a major and then start looking, but I want to know whats out there so I dont miss out something or go somewhere that I'll regret. I was shown a powerpoint in school of Missoula, Montana and really liked what I saw just from some of the pictures and what my teacher explained what it was like living there.

And thanks for the seeking out the thread on the mountains and claims/facts. Helps more than you would think.

"so not steep in MOST places"

check out the key word right there.

also check out that i copied that from another thread.

and i support that statement because LT is pretty flat in a lot of ways, but it does have the steeps and chutes that i want and look for.

21 yrs strong in missoula and i wouldent leave, bozo dope to bro live there, whatever montana for the win, and yeah drug scene in missoula will blow your mind for such a small place. ha so you speak da truth^

theres drugs everywhere it doesnt really bother me, it just annoys me when people make plans to smoke etc. when its winter and there is no one to go with to ski.

Yeah Missoula is alot more of a chill place, and all the skiing you could need. People will hate on snowbowl but thats just usually because they suck at real skiing and the vertical is too much. LT gets tons of snow, but BM is right, its flat like a pancake... i think only 1400 vert. a few little hole in one pillow lines but not worth the drive in my opinion. As for park bozeman will def have big sky and moonlight alot closer then Big mountain is to Missoula.

the setup isnt my favorite, its hard to get good full lines in because the park is so packed with features

true that. thanks for all the help. but if i were to make a trip to montana what mountain(s) would you suggest i pay a visit to, to get a feel for montana. i like park more than anything, but still. any suggestions?

bridger is a pretty nice reosrt but doesnt have the big commercial resort feel like big sky might throw off. imo of course

Thanks man. I will be checking these out! And yeah, michigan is good for one thing, and one thing only...park. So basically nothing considering almost every mountain/hill has one.

At UM you've got Snowbowl, Lost Trail, Lookout Pass, and Discovery all within about 2 hours driving distance, I grew up in Missoula and pretty much anything you wanna do outdoors is available down the bitterroot, off highway 93 there's plenty of epic back country. Missoula has more of a hippy feel and is about twice as big as bozeman. If you want to go for any kind of writing degree or liberal arts Missoula is the place to be, they've got a great law school.
MSU is more of an engineering and math oriented school. they also have a pretty good earth sciences department, with all of the mountains and terrain around geography is pretty interesting, i'm in the GIS program and its been legit so far. the geology program goes to yellowstone a lot for field trips. As far as skiing goes, you definitely wanna get a beacon and hit up schausman's and the ridge at bridger. There's also big sky, moonlight, great divide, red lodge, and discovery all within a couple hours. as far as back country goes hyalite canyon has a lot of stuff.

Thanks! Now that I've been looking into it more and more MSU has more of what I want major-wise. Looks like you cant go wrong skiing either place though. How many days out of they year would you say there is ski-able snow?

Go to UM if your looking to actually party then go here.. Bozeman is a cool town and everything and has big sky but lets be honest here most of the people at MSU are all hicks besides the small niche of dope skiers (which most of them are really cool) but the people in missoula are way more down to earth. Oh yeah snowbowl is the shit specially when they have snow they have some dope cliffs and natural stuff to play around on
