Moving to Tahoe... have a few questions

So I'm planning on dropping out of the University of Wisconsin so that I can move to South Lake Tahoe for a year and just ski and work and live the dream. I plan to return to school the following year... maybe stay in CA though. So that's my story... I have a few questions:

-What is the cost of living out there? I know you can live cheap pretty much anywhere... but what are your personal experiences in tahoe?

-What is the quality of the college like in Tahoe?

-Do you know if U.S. Cellular gets any coverage there?

-Are there any good local property management websites for looking at apartments?

-What resorts are best to work at? I have friends who work at Heavenly and can get me a lifty job on the gondola, but I want to check around.

-Anyone know what resorts have volunteer ski patrols? I'm a patroller in WI and want to keep patrolling out there(just another pass at another resort).

Thanks!

So stoked.

Well my parents said they'd keep paying for my phone, but only if I can stay on US Cellular. So I want to make that happen if I can.

Also, how is the drive from south lake to Squaw? Is it something that wouldn't be tough to make like once a week? Thinking about transferring to their ski patrol.

Its long because emerald bay is closed. Once or twice week would be do-able, but anymore than that would suck as you would have to go around the lake. I'd go with a south lake resort since you're already down there. Roughly a half hour to Sierra, or 45 - 1hr to Kirkwood.

I'm pretty sure US Cellular is a CDMA network company (same as verizon) ..........to they might use the same towers????? not 100% on that though :/.

good luck getting a patrol job at squaw lol. CA is expensive period. if you are gonna bum in tahoe, stay on the N Shore, or IMO it really isnt worth it. NShore has exponentially better resorts(Squaw, alpine).

tahoe has its peak season in the summer so if you are working in the hospitality sector, you will make most of your money in the summer. winter is pretty dead compared to summer.

Again, if you are gonna try and live the dream, for gods sakes dont do it on the S shore

Word.

North lake is WAY BETTER for bumming, and has way better resorts to ski at. If you are dying to party in South lake, it's not that far of a drive unless it's snowing enough to close down 89.

south lake is way cheaper then north lake and with Heavenly Sierra and kirkwood there is plenty of great skiing

if youre coming from wisconsin, southshore will blow you away. and by no means does it suck. but if you have one chance in your life to ski bum anywhere you want, why not go with a world class area? Kwood is the only area near southshore that has world class terrain, and thats 30+ minutes away.

if you live in tahoe city, you can have a world class jib park-Northstar, and two worldclass mountains- Squaw and alpine.

not to mention alpine builds world class jumps yearly

Most of the resorts around the lake use Natinal Ski Patrol as well as paid staff.

If you really want cheap living move to reno and ski north shore.

If you want to be a true ski bum and dont mind a little extra money for a place N. shore is your best bet all around.

S. Shore is fun but its nothing like N. shore.

n lake for more of a scene/ resorts. s lake a little more low key(talent level way lower) better BC access in my opinion. love living in meyers.
