im trying to move to SLC at the end of february and need cheap housing. im looking for places around $500/mo, but would prefer not to live with a bunch of bums and crackheads. any parts of town i should avoid / stick to? any advise or tips are appreciated

Salt Lake is cheap, $500 will put you in a decent neighborhood for sure. I'm partial to Sugarhouse (near downtown, and the U is right there which gives it a cool vibe) and Cottonwood Heights (easiest access to AltaBird), BCC, etc. As long as you avoid West Valley you'll be fine.

How old are you?

Where are you from?

Do you pay rent on time?

Are you clean?

Do you mind living with five 22+ skiers and boarders?

420 friendly?

do you drink?

I may have a room open in my house.... not sure yet though

Foothill apartments. We have a 2 bedroom with 3 people for around $430 after utilities.

Or get a house with homies and it can be even cheaper. A lot of shredders with rooms open if you look around.

Look around on the classifies of http://www.ksl.com in the "Rooms for rent" and houses/apartments sections for places. There are usually a bunch. Are you going to be attending school anywhere, or just working? That will influence your decision, but a good general rule of thumb for the downtown SLC area is to stay east of 700 East, or up in the northern part of the city called the Avenues. If you want to be more south of the city, just stay on the eastern side closer to the benches of the mountains.

lol west valley if you want to rent a mansion in the ghetto for 500 a month. that place is a shithole. with 5 a month roommate up and you can find a NICE place in the U/sugarhouse/westminny area which is where all the kids/hos/shredders and accompanying debauchery is or you can go down to murray/cottonwood heights and rent a big place with a few other people close to the mountains.

lots of choices, and 500 a month is a solid budget in salt lake.

i live right downtown and i love it.

rent is under 600 total for a 2 bedroom.

i can ride a bike everywhere i need to go but the canyons.

but i'm over 21. if you are under 21, maybe you would have more fun getting a room or apt closer to the u.

or in a existing fun skier house like the (maybe) offer a few posts up from eheath.

im living in sugarhouse. i like it-the neighborhood is sweet, and we've got markets and everything we need nearby. but we are a bit far from LCC. thats my only complaint, but we live in a sweet area with a good vibe and some fun things to do beside ski

I'm in the same boat. I think I want to live in Cottonwood Heights (nearest to skiing?), but I'm also going to be driving to U of U during the weekdays. I'm on a budget of about $750 a month, looking for a house.

you mean besides west valley right?

nah but for real, sugar hood is a great place to live. close to everything and doesnt feel like youre going to get shot. but if i could afford to live in PC ide probably take that over SLC. something to keep in mind OP depending on what youre going to be doing for work, or school, etc.

sugarhouse all the way! $750 for 2 bed 2 bath walking distance to bars/stores/whatever. 25 minutes to alta with no traffic! really cant beat that shit! oh and lots of cool young people and not weird mormons

I just moved into an apartment in Sugar House last week. It's a really cool area. I moved in with someone who is not a skier (found the add on craigslist) but it works out great. $375 a month utilities included, pretty nice spot right by the Sugar House Pub. I ski Brighton so the drive there is about 30 minutes if it isn't snowing out. Lots of stuff to do in the area; many food places, a few bars, some gyms, multiple grocery stores, movie theater, pretty much everything you need is all right there. Also it's like a seven minute drive downtown, can't beat it.

This, good neighborhood, located near Westminster College and the U so there are always parties. Good markets and shops too.

Sugarhouse! Lots of homies here and it's close to pretty much everything. You won't regret it if you decide to get a place here.

Andddd this theater is a dollar theater which is awesome if you don't mind waiting a little while to see new movies. It's so nice paying quarters to go to a movie instead of a ton of money.
