Moving to Reno

Just accepted a job offer in Reno and got some questions for people living in the area. If you were a 22 year old who loves to ski, go out to bars, go out to eat, be outdoors etc, where in the city would you live? I've done a little research but want a locals perspective. Also any UNR students or locals that like to ski looking for a roomate? I'd prefer to have some roomates to save and rent and meet people. Rent and other bills will always be paid and I'm not messy.

Stay in the red outline. The green circles are the most affordable places worth living. All the best bars are in midtown, but prices are skyrocketing in that neighborhood rn. Red $ means expensive af. Sparks can be cheaper but it's far from everything that's happening. South Reno is far from happenings too.

If you like to skate there are some fun parks and you can skate year round. Pretty decent to be able to ski and skate the same day throughout the winter. Also skatebouse in south lake is sick if you need your fix when its cold and like bowls and mini.

Where you skiing?

I've never lived in reno but there's plenty to do if youre in the right area. As mentioned there's some sketchiness too but Reno is pretty sweet. Actually I lived at a motel for a bit one season while trying to lock a place down in kings beach.

Rent seems to keep going up but hopefully you find a decent spot woth good roommates and have a killer time. Good luck on the move!

Another thing to consider is your commute to work. Where in town is your job?. If you can avoid 395 at rush hour, you'll have fast commutes. Hopefully, you aren't working out near the Gigafactory either. That drive can suuuck sometimes. The best place to work in town imo is near the Patagucci distribution center. Especially if you can get a place in Northwest Reno

Yeaaaaaaah, I'm out at the Gigafactory. I'm well aware the commmute is gonna blow some days but it's worth it for the job and I have a high tolerance for bullshit.

I got a high paying job so rents not too worrisome for me, just would rather have roomates to save more money and meet people. Gonna get passes to Rose and Boreal and possibly maybe Squaw. I know Epic does a local but not really interested in Heavenly and Northstar, and Kirkwood kinda a haul.

Heavenly sucks, kirkwood is sick, northstar has legit parks and some fun terrain. Boreal parks are on fire. Check put diamond peak. Should get 4 days on your boreal pass.

Rose is sick too only been a couple times to the actual ski area though.

Unless you know a lot of people at Boreal, I'd skip a pass there if I were you. They offer enough discounts on Fridays to get a few days in each season ($25 Fridays, $20 college days if you have an old student ID, etc.). It's a very small mountain by Tahoe standards and can get super crowded with gapers.

Rose is great and super close. Sugar Bowl is a sleeper hill too. Not too much further and usually less crowded.

I'd get Squaw/Alpine over Boreal if I were you. If you need the best park in Tahoe, get Epic and go to Northstar. And you can make the drive to Kwood every once in a while. 1.5hr is worth it. Just my 2 cents

Im in Reno id get a boreal all access pass with the woodward barn too if you like tramps and skating its fun af. And you gotta have an ikon pass too. Diamond peak pass is really cheap and they have good steep tree and they've been making the park top tier recently.

Definitely ski Sugar Bowl. That's where I ski, so I may be biased, But there's great terrain, a decent park, and it's way less crowded than squaw as boreal.

if i didnt have the ikook student discount I would probably rip sugar. Either that or make the trek to kirkwood on the weekends.

I love homewood. Its up there with my favorite resorts, it just sucks that you have to go through squaw traffic to get there.

Diamond Peak is legit. I second this. I had a rose pass, DP pass, Boreal pass, Vail pass, and ikon pass during my time out there. DP 100%. Pair it with a big pass like vail or ikon depending on what you want. Rose is cool but DP beats it in my mind. DP has better parks and the glades/soli canyon are unreal on good powder days. Plus, you don’t have half of Reno fighting you on a powder day. 15 more minutes from Reno - it’s worth it. Also. You get days at boreal, home wood, etc. on DP pass.
