Mouthguard for Skiing

I've seen a bunch of guys wearing mouthguards while park skiing and I was wondering if they actually help? I know they are mostly meant to prevent concussions but do they actually work? Also, do skiiers wearing mouthguards look stupid? I know it's not that big of a deal and looks don't matter that much but I was just wondering.

It's like wearing a helmet. It's not really uncomfortable if you get one that fits, it's not a big deal to wear, and it works. I got a couple minor chips before I finally started wearing mine fulltime, and that feeling fucking SUCKS. Knee to chin happens when you least expect it.

well it works if you get good ones. its kinda like an investment (similar to buys some FKS bindings) you put more money in, and in the long run, that product will return the favor to you, making the small amount you spent on it worth it. I have a personal experience from having a shitty mouthguard in Lacrosse and a guy DFA'd me straight in the dome with a d-pole. i got a concussion, but it would have been so much worse without the mouthguard. this season I invested in a super nice mouthguard, all custom fitted (not like those ones u can buy at dicks) but a $100 one and in the moguls it saved me from almost dying. if you drop enough cash you can even get your name on it :D

I use one for big mountain skiing and I have braces. I got a mouth guard in the beginning of the season for comps and wore is sometimes but then I crashed while I wasnt wearing it and bit off part of my tongue and chipped a tooth (as well as getting a concussion) and it could of been prevented by the mouth guard so now I almost always wear it.

my friend has one, but he only wears it when hes trying something sketchy. All in all its a pain if you dont have a nice one. but i will say we were doing warmups for my local rail jam, and some kid just faceplanted on the rail, chipped half his tooth, blood everywhere, and he was freaking out\. Like a 1/4 of the kids wouldnt hit that flat bar again haha but its really your decision.

My friend has one, you look life a doofus wearing them but they can save your teeth. I will probably get one soon here when my braces are off to protect my $5,000 smile.

My orthodontist is going to do this for me when all my treatment is done, and I can't WAIT. The one I have right now is this sorta generic, weird two-piece thing. Definitely invest if you can because it's also more comfortable. Guys like Kieran and BMOS are able to just leave them in while they're riding and be pretty much normal, whereas I have to pop mine out if I want to talk at all.

ya i had the same problem when I got my concussion i was wearing the two piece one. its not even a mouthguard, just uncomforttable rubber. and be careful with the prices of mouthguards from orthodontists. I didnt get mine from the orhodontist cuz it was about $300 to have one with all the fitting and stuff. instead I got mine for $35 which was the same exact mouthguard but I had color customization, a logo on the front, and my name on the side.if you want me to tell you more I can help you out since I know you are working with MHSSC, which is basically the only way to get a good deal like i did.

Hmm...Maybe I should use mine. I never really thought of it but why not I guess. It's not very nice but I'm sure It'll do something.

Where can i get one? My family would destroy me if my i chipped a tooth now because of braces and last year i had a couple of close calls. Are the ones you get at like sports shops fine or is there special ones that actually work.

just get a custom fit one like a shock doctor would work fine and thats like 30 bucks, but it is a pain in the ass to talk with all of those ones you can buy at the store, and they arent always the best. even shock doctors are skimpy sometimes, I know they werent very effective for me.

There's no correlation between wearing mouth-guards and getting concussions. It doesn't do anything.

I just use one that i use to have for football and only use it on sketchy stuff. Idk if a super nice one is really worth it if you're only wearing it every once in a while. If you planning on wearing it a lot and talking in it then go for the custom one. But at the end of the day even a cheap one is better than nothing at all.

I have one that I keep in my pocket. I usually put it in when I drop in for anything big for me. Sometimes always. Had braces and really

Don't want to mess up my teeth and prevents concussions. Have a 3$ Walmart one. Why not use one?

ive seriously been considering getting one for next year. i think i will just to protect my teeth and after taking some knees to the chin this year

ive been wearing one since i started big mountain skiing not for teeth pretection for concussions ive had alot already mouthgaurds are a good idea you just string it to your helmet and only wear it when your actually skiing

padre's a dentist and i've been meaning to get one made for days that i hit bigger jumps and am lapping park faster. i figure there's no reason not to, would rather keep these pearly whites

I think he said it might be on the house after all the money we've given them over the years, and because he's super chill, but yeah I definitely want to know how you did it.

I wear mine whenever I'm trying something sketchy or hitting any larger scaled urban. Really want to keep my teeth nice and perfect

I wear one pretty much all the time in the park. Ive caught some shit for it from little assholes, people tend to look at you funny when you take it out on the lift and shit, but most of the time your lookin too steezy with your bandanna for any of them to notice it anyway.

Pretty sure mouth guards don't really do a whole lot for concussions. I read some medical journals on them when I was going a statistics project, conclusions was basically it was to proven to reduce the risk or severity. Idk, couldn't hurt. If I ever really start sending it for big mountain I'll probably get one seing as my rents spend a few $K on braces.....

I used to wear one sometimes and it stopped some chipped teeth for sure. If you're thinking about it, ask your parents to help you out with a real one from your dentist, not a DIY store-bought one.

i wear one for big mountain hucking days and trying new stuff in the park. it has not been scientifically proven that they prevent concussions, but they do protect ur teeth and i personally feel more solid when i take a hit wearing one. ive got a clear one, so if ur worried about ur image thats an option

I feel like as long as you keep your mouth shut (teeth together) then you should be alright. Iv taken knee to chin like that multiple times and no damage

Dude, have you ever tried to do that? Even if you take a small slam off say a rail its damn impossible to keep your mouth shut like that. I think your probably more likely to chip your teeth doing that. Taking a slam off a 50 ft booter its definaitly impossible to overcome the physics there, not to mention if your trying to keep your mouth closed you might end up biting your tongue off.

I've had a few close calls with some rails, and believe it or not....my skis. I knuckled a table and one of my skis came off and popped me in the teeth. Ever since then I've worn a mouthguard when i'm skiing park. If you're skiing to be "steezy" you're not skiing for the right reason. If you started a thread, you're clearly concerned about it, so why not spend the $30 or $50 on a mouthguard. Not to mention when you're on your own health insurance, a hospital visit for knocked out teeth or a trip to the dentist to fix a chip is by no means free.

I use the slightly cheaper version of the shockdr mouthgard and it works fine. Molding them is the big pain in the ass, if you do it wrong you can tottally wreck them so be careful and follow the directions exactly.
