Mounting a light on my helmet?

i had this idea after night skiing last night to mount an old picatinny rail on the side of my helmet so i can attach a flashlight to it, since i don’t really have any use for either. should i be worried about damaging my helmet or like reducing its effectiveness in the case that i take a hard hit to the head?

You should be fine, especially if you have mips
 
Yes, anything you put on your helmet can up your chances of it catching if you crash and putting more force on your brain and neck.

That said, just put a GoPro mount on your helmet, or use their mount that just straps through vents. That style of mount has become the unofficial standard for lights and accessories, so will be more useful for more outdoor accessories than a system that's mostly used for firearms.
 
Drilling into the shell could compromise its stability but probably fine. Could always use a 3M adhesive like the ones for gopro mounts
 
Might be a bit overkill, but Team Wendy makes a helmet that has exactly what you need. Looks kinda gooberish and tactical, but if you want it all kitted for night skiing, it's probably the best bet.

Fun fact: this was part of a disinformation campaign that was intended to mislead the germans into thinking that the British pilots and ground crews had better night vision due to nutrients in carrots. In reality, however, the Brits had a new radar that vastly improved their air defense and readiness.

?

It was the early detection radar they were trying to keep concealed. WWII era fighters did not have radar, to my knowledge
