My mountain bike got stollen a few months back, I got $500 for the insurance company and are willing to spend a maximum of $1000 dollars. What brands are good? What is affordable? Should I get a used bike?

If shopping new for $1000 you could get a decent hard tail but if you upped your price limit to like $1300 you could get into the next echelon.

In the bike world there are value brands and premium brands.

Couple value brands would be trek, giant or norco. couple premium brands would be like specialized, cannondale or santa cruz

What are you looking to ride with said bike?

Down hill and jumps and shit, what do they call that flow park. I don't do like huge gaps either I'm not too experience only like 6-7 foot gap max. I would like to progress though.

if you're just starting getting a hardtail will do you a world of favors in terms of learning how to pick lines and being able to ride dirt jumps as well.

that and for 1000 finding a downhill rig that isn't straight fucked or 10 years old would be next to impossible, or at least when I used to ride it was. I sold a 10 year old norco a-line in 2015 for a grand lol
