Motorsports crashes can be some of the most gruesome things on TV.

It was so graphic when Ota gets out of his car and is rolling on the road in pain and attempts to get up and collapses. This crash caused big reforms in the JGTC. The man who gets Ota out of the burning Ferrari is another racer who stopped, not a marshal. If the racer had not stopped and got him out, he would have burned to death without a doubt. JGTC and Fuji speedway were sued by Ota for negligence.

There is lots of terrible open wheel accidents that are pretty horrid but it seems sports car accidents are normally a bit more tame.

what injuries did the dude have? i'm amazed he was able to walk around after going through that

The F1 accident where the car spins out, hits the tree, the wheels flies off and kills another driver on the track is pretty gruesome.

for most motorsports fans this is the most heart wrenching accident that has ever been caught on film. I didnt want to post it since it is incredibly heart breaking to watch the reactions in this one... but I guess it is an important part of F1's history.

The man in the car died.

Only reason I know of this one is because my parents were at this race. They said the wind was gusting 70mph across Turn 2.

And this one is just brutal to watch.

If you are sqeamish do not look at the picture at the bottom of the video.

Alex Zanardi had both legs amputated at the hip IN this crash.

Come on man, the footage is not even that gnarly and that was the death of one of F1's greatest drivers.

Tragic accident, from the unequipped Marshalls, to the drivers who didn't stop because they thought it was Purley who had safely exited the burning car and the firetruck that had to complete almost an entire lap. Misconceptions and a tragic lack of safety.

Another fatal F1 crash which is in the same sort of realm of tragicness is that of Tom Pryce:

Two marshalls were rushing across the track (unimaginable in these days) towards Zorzi's car which had broken down right after the brow of the hill in the track. At that time Pryce was driving right behind Stuck on the main straight, Stuck saw the marshalls and veered to the right but with his view obstructed by Stuck, Pryce did not see them and hit the second marshall at a speed of 270km/h.

The marshall was thrown into the air and landed yards in front of Zorzi and Bill. He died upon impact, his body being literally torn in half by Pryce's car.

The 20kg fire extinguisher the marshall had been carrying smashed into Pryce's head, before striking the Shadow's roll hoop. The force of the impact was such that the extinguisher was thrown up and over the adjacent grandstand. It came to ground in the car park to the rear of the stand, where it hit a parked car and jammed its door shut. The impact with the fire extinguisher had wrenched Pryce's helmet upward sharply, and he had been partially decapitated by the strap. Death was almost certainly instantaneous.

fucking a man, this shit is gnarly and fucking sad imo. RIP to all those who lost their lives. wow. crazy thread.

Also, it's not F1/Open Wheel, but this had to be included since this thread has kind of become a tribute to people lost in the world of motorsports.

It's crazy to me how much luck plays into surviving the crashes. You have ones that look just impossible to survive where the people walk away, then you have ones like earnhardt's that look like a pretty everyday crash where people die. It's scary really.
