Most fucked winter on earth: Mountain High, CA

That's right, 19 inches of total natural snowfall this season with no snow in sight. Two years ago we had 45 inches, 77 last year, then 19 of the sorriest, wettest snow on earth this year. Compare this to the roughly 150 inches we receive on average. Granted, Mountain High has snowmaking on basically the entire hill, but even that has been limited to a few days this year. Even during below average snow years it's been cold enough to lay down feet of man-made snow that took us well into April. This year has been spring-like all year, and closing day will likely come this month.

I am just curious have have any of you had a worse winter than Mountain High this year or in years prior? I know Mammoth and Tahoe were both pretty sparse until the recent arrival of the Pineapple Express.

Admittedly, this is a first world problem. I am blessed to ski when I can and I've had a smile on my face every day on the hill. Props to the park crew for having a bitchin park top to bottom the whole year.

In so cal, 5 hr drive to Mammoth is the only way this year. Bear and summit better than the rest down here, but not by much. It has been a total blow out. This is like the third no-season in a row for Baldy (they need natural snow to open and survive); I hope they can come back from it.

But I share your sentiment - a truly fucked time in so cal.

but yeah its fucked, i remember going up to waterman a few years ago for a powder day, shits getting fucked

Gotta say my rail game has gotten a lot better during my time at High this season since the jumps are so weak. Gotta look at it as a tradeoff and just ski Mammoth as much as possible.

While the midwest is having such a bad season for snowfall the east coast has been getting pounded (well not pounded in terms of the west but pounded in terms of what the east coast usually gets) with snowfall this year. My home mountain has opened earlier than it did the past 3 years and will most likely stay open later

My home mountain had its best opening in over 10 years. We had a 45 inch base in November now we have a 41 inch base. Meanwhile just 200 miles north in CO they are at like 150% of average. Fuck this winter.

I didn't say anything about this year dude jesus christ. There are years where some resorts in the Midwest only get a fee inches and it's 100% man made

You average 166" a year. Mount high, in short, is an east coast mountain with so cal assholes, nobody cares.

Yeah CA is in a drought but your season can be made with 2 storms, unlike TAHOE, a place that actually gets snow, which IS having it's worst season on record.

I've been skiing here at "Mount High" for 3 seasons now and haven't met a single asshole yet. Sure Tahoe gets snow, but Tahoe isn't 50 minutes from my house. Mountain High might as well be in Mexico compared to Tahoe.

luckily you actually have the options to travel to other states and resorts, here in Australia the season goes for 3 months and we really only ever get 1-1.5 metres during those 3 months so consider yourself lucky

When some place has a bad season for a year or two or three the next year is guaranteed blower fucking power you guys better get your snorkels ready.

yeah, tahoe has it worse right now. they are used to infinite snow, and they are getting jack shit.

Tahoe is actually skiing incredibly well right now considering they've only had 2 decent storms since the beginning of December.

I love mt high, but there are some dickbags there. some of the people are mean. most of the people are more stoked on skiing or snowboarding than anywhere i've seen

Dear OP,

by the year 2100, based on current estimates, this would be considered a very wet year

sincerely,

we're all fucked

Isn't always pretty fucked at Mtn High anyway? hhaa gotta roust you a bit hommie- used to live in WW for years, got smart and started skiing big mountain over at Baldy. It's a rough season for everyone. Storms are on the horizon though. Maybe another "March Miracle ". Remember that? Pray for it!!
