Since you guys got pounded and we got under a foot in Jackson, my friend and I are looking to drive up to MT on Tuesday to ski Wednesday. Neither of us has skied Montana before, so we're looking for ideas on where to do. I know Red Lodge and the Tobacco Roots got the most snow. Also, if you have a sled, and wanna meet up with us, we'll pay for sled gas and snacks!
 
I'd check out the Tobacco Roots for sure, just make sure you either have a sled or an extreme excess of determination. Also watch the weather, it's supposed to be warmer and sunnier the next few days and it's hard to say what 50-60" of new snow on top of nothing will do. As far as access goes, nothing there is really that convenient. Just tow the sled around the foothills by McAllister or thereabouts until you see something that looks sweet, then go for it (or try to find someone who knows some good spots up there).

I would love to join you, but school keeps me too busy during the week for skiing.
 
I'll second the warning, even the news channels are talking about the high avalanche danger. If you go out, stay on the low angle slopes and in the trees if possible.
 
i just called red lodge to see what their deal is. apparently it is on mostly forest service land, so you can hike there. the lady told me there is 4 feet (!!) of snow there currently. she said anyone going there to ski should check in with someone. there at least, you would have some set runs, and maybe have a better idea of what to ski. but thats also a few more hours away. assuming the beartooth highway is already closed for the season- which im not really sure of...
