Mogul Question

KRASHED

Ok so my dad and I had a bit of a debate going at supper and I need NS's help to solve it. I said that moguls were made somehow by a groomer but he argues that its not possible. Anyone know how moguls are made? (other than the ones that are made after a hill gets thrashed for an entire day)

that cant be right though, I saw moguls that looked brand new, they were huge and in a perfect pattern

Many mtns in the east use machines to make moguls. The machine digs patterns on the snow's surface. Snow is usually blown on after. Then it's up to the skiers. Of course pushing around freshies makes moguls too. Think of competition courses, machine made.

Some course are built by snowcats, it involves pushing up successive lines of snow (imagine speedbumps top to bottom), and then coming in from the side and staggering the lines until you have a "checkerboard" pattern. Then you need lots of skiers to sidestep, then sideslip, the bumps. Then they ski them, slip them some more and away you go.

They used to make "perfect" courses, but now they will intentionally change the spacing to promote changes of pace in the turning.

Lately more and more courses are built by simply grooming a run and setting some short gates for everyone to ski around, less work and pretty mush the same result.

you ski them up in a line.. one after the other until ruts form then you keep skiing and maybe shovelling snow on them.. man you dont know anything about moguls

At my resort they use a groomer to make some of the moguls, I haven't seen the groomer but my friend said it looks like a big suction cup that slams down on the ground and then when it gets lifted up there is a clean mogul underneath
