im pretty sure they're the same format but miniDV tapes are smaller, and better cameras use them therefore better quality.

Yeah MiniDV is the next big thing, like digital cameras were 3 years ago. I want one but the smalls one are expensive like hell!

i don't snowboard, i'm straight

I bought just a digital camcorder but it was very expensive too. I paid $1400 CAD for it but it has pretty good quality. It takes stills as well.

I got the Canon Zr60. Pretty good size and cost.

'Digital video camera' is the general name for any video camera where information is stored digitally. MiniDV is just one format of digital video, and is by far the most common amoung consumer models. Regular DV is older technology, and is only really available on semi-pro models now.

I bet he's talking about the sony's that can record on the 2 hour hi-8 tapes, but in digital format instead of the analog normally associated with hi-8. Whoever said they're the same is right, what will make a difference is the camera (CCD size, resolution, etc...). One other point is that the hi-8 or digital 8 tapes (they're the same) is that they're much cheaper than mini-DV tapes. Mini-DV is used much more often though.
