Military Spending

Americas military accounts for 40% of total world arms spending. Sitting at just over 1 trillion dollars it is 20% of our federal budget. Should we Increase of Decrease? Discuss.

Decrease. Obviously.

USA spends more per capita on military spending than any other nation in the world. (UAE is sometimes reported as being higher, but with a MUCH smaller population and I would wager generally wealthier).

USA's total military budget is larger than the sum total of the next thirteen leading military spenders.

(aka: USA military budget > 2-13 next largest spenders.)

Overall, (there could be slight gaffes in the above /claims) but regardless: our spending is enormously disproportionate compared to the rest of the world. The size of our navy, satellite systems, air force, nuclear arsenal, ground forces, etc far exceeds comparable nations.

decrease, but not by an incredibly huge amount.

like it or not, the US has a massive global presence, and will continue to do so. Those bases abroad also form mini-economies. Take away a base with thousands of people, and you lose quite a few jobs and the local economy can take a huge hit, unless the closure/redevelopment is handled perfectly.

Hahahaha omg, you're fired and rehired. That is ridiculous.

If he refuses to raise taxes do you think he also refuses to spin off rails?

Instead of producing more weapons at home we need to foster global relations by engaging in international weapons trade with our most hated enemies, such as Iran, North Korea, and Russia.

Military: decrease a Little.

Defense: Keep it the same.

A huge reason why defense budgets are skyrocketing is because these vbig companies (Boeing for example) that get these government contracts are unnecessarily inflating the shit out of their prices. The government really can't do much about it so they have to accept a higher price every time the want to make something.

Don't even get the guy started on the new rockered profiles...

i thought military spending was at 600 billion annually. Im all for spending less on the military, nobody is going to fuck with the united states. But if you cut the military you have to cut most other government programs at the same rate. Thats the only way shit will be fixed. Raising taxes isnt going to do enough. I heard obama and boener are at war over enough taxes to run the government for a mere 8 days. We dont have a revenue problem we have a spending problem

If we continue to increase military spending, or if we leave it as it is, we deserve what we get: teacher shortages, crumbling infrastructure, privatized police and fire departments, no money for this and no money for that.

but if you cut military spending, then we lose military jobs!

if you legalize drugs, we lose drug enforcement jobs!

if you say cigarettes are bad and will kill you, people will still smoke them to be badass!

etc.

The Boeing KC-X project is super tame compared to the F-35 project that Lockheed has basically been milking for Billions (yes, billions with a B). Boeing is actually going to take a big loss on the KC-X and probably won't break even, at least partially because they slashed the price to be more competitive against EADS.

The whole contracting process for the KC-X was a clusterfuck I won't even begin to get into.

Military contracting in general never quite works out right.

At the heart of the issue is this: For years we have been spending just slightly lower as percent of GDP as we were in the early to mid 80s. This is up a little due to the "global war on terror" as well.

A report out early this year by the Joint Chiefs of Staff essentially said that preparing a military to fight 2 large scale wars on different continents was unnecessary and that the military needs to change from cold-war era thinking to a modern era where there are not defined lines and battle zones and the enemy doesn't have sophisticated weapons or wear uniforms.

In the same report they said the greatest threat to the country was not a foreign threat, it is a domestic threat.

Oh god, I don't think I can handle any more Boeing talk. I just finished a 10,000 word paper on that fucking company.

Let's first differentiate what constitutes "defense" spending, then eliminate what is actually "offense" spending, and uphold the "defense" spending.

The 787 project was fffffffffucked. My dad works for Boeing and had engineers on the test flight that had the fire. They could have died. What's worse is if that did not happen on a test flight, or on approach, and instead on a JAL flight over the Pacific somewhere after delivery, the plane would have gone down, no question.

Oh, is that why? The specifics of this incident are way more detailed than I would like to get into now. The bigger thing to come out of this was the failure of the redundant systems and behavior of the flight computers and effect of plane control when the systems started failing. Without the incident it is likely the plane would have been certified to fly as is.

The military is making cuts, and has been. I'm in the Air Force, and for example they are cutting funding everywhere you look. Little things over time add up. Such as I can't get a pair of boots issued to me, I have to go out and buy it all myself. They are kicking people out of the military in general for any reason they can find. The amount of people they are recruiter has dropped because simply they are not taking as much as they used to. In my shop we can't even get a decent set of tools to work on mission essential things. Things that if they were to break, we can't fix it and the entire mission is fucked. It's bad where I am. Talking to some friends at other bases, they say damn near the same thing.

People want to see results now, and big numbers. But if you look at it over a period of time, we are decreasing military expenditures. There is even talk of getting rid of our retirement pay/ making huge cuts to it. And in time they are going to reduce TA (tuition assistance) by a fuckton. It's coming people, but you just have to be patient. Something like this you just can't cut major funding and expect everything to be working fine, it takes time.

yeah dude i hate it when they test thing and find out they dont work so they fix the problem before selling it. that shit is terrible.

military industrial complex....cut spending lose jobs, gvt supports wayyyy to many jobs. but hey we are a capitalist society...so it makes sense. private enterprise pays blue collar workers with money it receives from building weapons for the gvt that it will never use. Its pretty fucked up...why not put the money into infrastructure, space exploration, renewable energy. same cost less waste, more roi

yah i would say that the offense is not necessary right now, but defense if we change it at all increase, because of what is going on right now.

^ well then move and give your citizenship to some poor african child who would kill his parents to live here.

Decrease by a ton.

Fuck the amount of money we waste, fuck the shit we do in other countries, fuck the people idiots vote for, fuck the legislation they pass, fuck this I'm making pizzzzzzaaaaaaa

You know the us gov adds 100 jobs a day? That's what we need to cut. Military spending should be cut too. But mainly that cancerous fuck mr Obama needs to sit the fuck down with his exploding gov spending

cut govt military spending

the people that get hardons from killing innocents are welcome to join extremists like al-nusra in syria as they topple the baathist govt

FUCK YEAH IT FEELS SO AWESOME TO CAUSE COLLATERAL DAMAGE WHILE TRYING TO KILL A FUCKHEAD WHO INSTIGATES VIOLENCE AGAINST YOU. get a fucking brain, no one wants innocent people dead.
