Mike Shaw Crash has me geeked

Was scrolling Instagram the other day and came across this video of a guy named Mike Shaw, who coached free skiers in CO it looked like and I wish I’d never seen it.

Anyways, he crashed doing a nose butter 7 off a knuckle, lands forward heavy, punches forward and lands in one of the classical face full of snow falls except he ends up dislocating his neck and paralyzing himself.

Only reason I’m writing this is bc the crash did not look that bad but it has me rethinking it all. The guy was a good skier it looked like and a simple crash resulted in that… like fuck. I don’t mind getting a little banged up and have had my fair share of slams but that’s a whole other level.

Anyone else get a little mentally uneasy when they see shit like that?

i saw the video on reels, i agree its scary that a mild crash like that can do so much damage, i'm glad i saw it though, to keep it as a reminder to chill

PK Hunder did the same at a JOI event back in the day. Stuck and flew face first. Kept living life but something felt odd so he went to doctor. Broken neck.

got the video of the crash? also I heard his book is pretty good

its in the first 30 seconds of this video. You’ll see what I mean by how it looks like a pretty simple fall you’d take skiing park.

Yes but you can't think about that when you ski or it's more likely to happen, just trust your abilities and do what you do.

This is the main thing I tell people when they ask me for advice on new jump tricks, how to get over fear of crashing on bigger jumps, etc. Just visualize exactly what you are going to do. Exactly how you are going to make it. Spend time thinking about how to do every aspect correctly. Don't imagine the things that can go wrong, or else that visualization will be more likely to happen. I do feel fear, but I don't visualize what can go wrong, so the fear is simply an intimidation, not an actual fear of something specific that I have imagined.

Hunder crash was scary as hell. He made a full recovery at least he had some sick shots in the later Field movies

holy shit this made me laugh

Its fucked up but I really geeked out on learning kinematics when it comes to trauma. Skiing is super unique in that regard when you see someone get knocked out cold on a jump for instance as well as any other sport. Especially the NFL with those below the belt hits and legs.

Knew someone who became a quadriplegic skiing a cat track. He was bent over with his arms tucked behind hus back trying to make it across the flats when he hit a super sticky patch of snow. Double ejected forwards and didn’t have time to protect his head. Literally anything could happen at any time.

I think the craziest shit I've ever seen is a dude who sliced his artery on his wrist last year at Woodies. He pulled-through but he was just doing some sort of butter on a board but caught his hand. Shouts out his homie for having the smarts to make an impromptu torniquet on.

Once was stopped a few towers from the top of the lift for a very long time, you could tell lots of people including myself were starting to get frustrated. Well when it finally started running again and I came around at the top, i see an older gentleman laying on his side with ski patrol cutting away his pants. He had a laceration from the top of his ski boot along the backside of his leg all the way to his upper butt. There was so much red snow. I immediately felt bad for being impatient and I think about that every time i see someone fall in that backwards/sideways way onto their tails.
