Mid-Fat Directional Suggestions

Now that season is in the rearview I have too much time on my hands and am thinking about next year's quiver. Looking to fill out the hole between my Masterblasters (96mm) and my Bibbys (118mm). I love my Masterblasters on firm, inbounds stuff and am thinking of something similar but wider -- around 108mm -- for bowls and chutes after the pow is gone. The Commander looks damn appealing to me. My preferred style of skiing is directional fall-line skiing, making big turns with a bigger smile. No buttering or jibbing these days. Have been on JSkis Metals and didn't love the rocker profile and also Armada Invictus 108Ti and just didn't love them overall. Fairly lightweight at 155 lbs. Any suggestions appreciated.

Does the 2018 Corvus have metal in it? I believe the 2019 Corvus has titanal and less camber than this year's model.

yeah they re did next years model. Imo get a pair of wren 108s. But then again moments new comander seems so nice with its titanal. If your gonna spend the guap on black crows just cop on3p or moment, they both make killer mid fat directional chargers. If you can find last years wren 108 its a tad bit softer than this coming years, more forgiving.

Commander 108 has been in pole position in my head for a while now, but just wanted to hear some others' thoughts. Partial to Moments and love my Bibbys, so may end up with pair of Commanders in the Fall.

Yeah. I was gonna pick up a pair but then I got an insane deal on some new wrens. They look amazing.

You will love the k2 pinnacle 105. Metal wood and a dam fun ski at speed. Those things rip so hard and just ask to be skied hard

Tbh I didn’t like the pinnacles. Thought they weren’t stiff enough or heavy enough to be stable. They don’t have the true 2 layers of titanal in them, instead they use a lighter core and little strips of metal to help with stability, doesn’t work. Correct me if I’m wrong tho. I really don’t like how they ski tho.

The Nordica Enforcer 110 is fucking fantastic. I have Bibby's and there is some overlap between the two but, honestly, they compliment each other well. I'd describe it as a less playful more carvy Bibby.

Hey each to their own. Which year did you try though? This seasons were updated with more mass over the edge, 50% more camber and a slightly reduced rocker profile. If you tried this seasons and still found them too soft then maybe you would prefer a new freeride ski that may be coming out, maybe mid season, from k2, but that's all I can tell you for now sorry.

I’m not sure what year but I assume that they are the current ones. Also I did not think about this but the mounting point may have been off, I was using a friends pair who rides for k2 and they adjusted the bindings for me.

I ski 2017 K2 Pinnacle 105 and they are great in 20-30cm powder snow; good in soft crud and it is ok on the piste, but on really high speed the nose is chattering. In conclusion, for the condiition where I ski, I think they do great job. sorry for mybad English :P

PS If I had to buy skis for now, I would wait for Line Sakana. They look great.

My coach was skiing those this year. I never really asked about them cuz I would never consider them, but he only took it out on days when it was slushy and it was like a comp day where he would be hiking around or goofing off and making short turns (aka not charging very hard). So i think its safe to say they are not chargy whatsoever. im pretty sure they have like a 15m turning radius, that is sooooo short for a directional ski its kinda funny.

the classic midfat directional ski is the blizzard cochise, I personaly am not a fan of that ski in particular but it has most of the traits you would want in a directional charging ski, 108 underfoot, high 20s turn radius, pretty stiff and heavy.

wren 108 would be a great option, I wouldn't recomend the sakana or any of the pinnacle series based on weight and turn radius. my little experience on the pinnacle 105 left me putting it in the same catagory as the soul 7, basically a dad ski that performs okay on consistet snow and quite bad on variable conditions.

Want the same out of a skis and thinking of the Black Crows Corvus, but I'm more like 80kg. Sick Day 104 seems to get a good write up as an a freeride oriented all rounder?

I've done some serious research into this and I love the dimensions and shape of the Corvus. Plus, you can score this year's skis for $495 at link below. You may want to look into the 2019 Corvus which has titanal in it, but they changed the rocker/camber significantly so pay attention to that. Personally, I like the camber and minimal rocker as I have Bibby's for the deep stuff and want theses for firmer conditions on the steeps.

When freeskier mag or whatever mag it is was doing their tests at aspen this year I ran into someone testing next years corvus. Mentioned that he likes next years muchhhhh better than this year. I have no clue why or the context behind it but just thought i should put it out there. Who knows how he skis or what he likes in a ski.

Volkl 100eight are a very good alternative..exceptionally lightweight without chattering when pushing hard even on firm conditions, you can tour them(I tour 1000-1200mt with dynafit beast 13))and enjoy them in pow and firn.Great choice for me

I have a pair of 16/17 Blizzard peacemakers as my daily driver and they’ve been an absolute blast the past couple seasons. Basically a wider, stiffer, almost symmetrical park ski at 104 underfoot. Super damp, great on groomers, quick turn radius, fun in park, but beefy enough for some deeper stuff and variable crud.

Unfortunately peacemaker/gun smoke was discontinued and traded out for rustler 10 and rustler 11 but they both seem relatively damp with the titanal, and some playfulness with that camber/rocket/camber and won’t be quite as stiff as the Cochise. Enjoyed both when I demo’d And friends and coworkers seem to love them. Blizzard doesn’t seem to get a ton of love on this sight, but they tend to do great all over the hill.
