Michigan tech owns their own ski hill

I'm in the college application process and I came across Michigan tech and saw they have their own ski hill known as Mont Ripley. I'm seriously considering going there now because I would love to ski that much. Anyone on NS ski there? I'm wondering how it is and if it's worth going to such a small school.

Cool yeah I should probably look for a better place and stoners don't have to be dumbasses just do you know I'm pretty damn smart and I smoke all the time. But anyways yeah I would guess there are a bunch of other places I could go to to ski all the time

Michigan Tech is a great school if you want to go into engineering. Mont Ripley is small, but has some park features. Plus it has night skiing and you can stack mad laps. Mt. Bohemia is 45 minutes away, and the best skiing in the midwest. 300"+ a year (lake effect). Finally the town of Houghton/Hancock has alot of urban. Snowboard crews were filming there for a number of years. Forum (RIP), and Dan Brisse have all had a number of shots from there.

Plus some of the best mountain biking in the USA outside of the PNW is in Copper Harbor a hour away.

Shit that's some sweet news because when I'm not skiing I'm always mountain biking so that's a huge plus and I've wanted to go to Mt. Bohemia for a long time. And I'm planning on going into engineering and I heard its a good school. Maybe I'll have to visit up there this winter so I can see the college(really just an excuse to ski Mt. Bohemia to my mom). That all sounds like it'd be pretty sick my only concern is that it's a small school and I like a bigger school. But skiing a worth it so..

hah! Dartmouth doesn't have stoners?

You're just making yourself sound silly.

also- anybody can get a pass to the Dartmouth Shitway

I checked them out at a college fair and they said that if I toured, they would get me in for free! I'm not sure that I'll be going there, but I'm stoked on free skiing.

I'm also considering going to MT as well. Plus u got this insaine hidden stash a few minutes awayhttp://www.mtbohemia.com/

Mont Ripley isn't very big but they have a park and its just across the bridge from Tech campus. I've actually never skied there, but they definitely have a bunch of urban spots in Houghton/Hancock. The mt biking is pretty sweet there too. Tech also has it's own trail system including some dirt jumps and a bunch of ladder riding and what not. If you go check out Tech, have pizza at the Ambassador. I'd say best sausage pizza I've ever had

Mont Ripley isn't that big but the park has a lot of features. it has a tbar and you can lap it hard. very few schools that are as good as mtu have ski options as close as mtu. and then its free....and then the Bohemia pass is 99 dollars... great skiers, no girls, lots of pow, and tons of urban. if i was smarter i would've applied there..

While it is cool that Tech owns the hill there are some drawbacks.

1. Hill doesn't open until around 3 on weekdays

2. If you are not a tech student lift prices are super expensive.

3. Ski hill doesn't open until after Christmas break

4. Ski hill is closed during midterm and finals week.

I considered going to Tech for this reason back in the day. Ended up switching out of engineering so I would have probably transfered if i had attended. Can't really say much else about it.

That's what happens when the school owns the ski hill. Gogebic community college also runs a ski hill which the Ski Area Management students operate.

yeah Mt. Bohemia looks sick, I discovered it about two years ago and have been dying to ski there since. I also saw some collab that they did with a ski company. The skis have the Mt. Bohemia logo on them pretty sickfound it...http://sccskis.com/colab/

Pros: GREAT engineering school, affordable if you live in state, Marquette mountain is only an hr and half away, Bohemia is great IF they get a fresh dump but usually isn't open until January, KBC and the Library rank in the top of breweries in Michigan, especially the UP.

Cons: Good luck finding women, it's and hour and half to anything, and it is COLD[/u] (windchill often well below 0 degrees F).

College should be picked on your major preference not solely on its perks. However, Michigan Tech has many perks and it is one of the best schools in the nation for engineering as they have great internships and co-ops when you get into your 3rd year.

spent the last 4 years in marquette, mi before i moved out west

never went to mont ripley but i've heard good things besides what is mentioned above.

you can get a mt bohemia pass for $99 one day in december. each lift ticket is 50+, and being so close it would be stupid not to

don't forget to mention tech is ~90% dudes

My final decision was between UW-Madison and Michigan tech. I was super excited to ski there all the time, especially after skiing when I toured last winter. Here's the thing though. It's 80% males, I can honestly say I saw maybe a handful of girls when I went there. If you want to live more of the college life I would say go somewhere else, you'll always find ways to ski.

If your pretty damn smart, you should know choosing a college because they have a ski hill is pretty dumb.

enjoyed my time at tech and keweenaw peninsula. school is a solid

engineering school and the area is amazing if you like the outdoors.

Bohemia is a gem on snow days and ripley allows you to ski whenever you

have spare time. Biking, hiking and fishing is top notch as well.

However, the UP isn't for everyone. I knew so many people who hated the

small town/rural surrounding area.

university of utah basically has 7 of their own ski hills. if skiing means that much to you, you really should be looking outside the midwest.

Bump because I rode mont Ripley and it was fucking sweet. There's plenty of powder stashed around the hill. The park was on point, all the rails were slick. Right above the park there's a big bowl filled with hard pack that was better than what I skied on in Montana. The rail garden is to die for, if they had a rope tow and slightly better jumps (they're already above average), I would sell my soul to go to Michigan tech.

I saw a guy wearing a jacket with Mont Ripley on it today. It was all the way in west virginia and I thought it was interested. Liberty university in Virginia has a snowflex so you can go there. Only problem with liberty is most of the girls won't put out until marriage..

I went there to tour it and the hill really isn't that great. If you like it enough though just make sure it's the right place you would be comfortable at.

It's no mountain, but the region does get the most snowfall per year in the country. You get pow days like twice a week, it's hard to beat that. The rail section felt like stuff I dream about- small, quick, trickable, and creative rails. The banana tail rails are amazing, basically just a flat rail with 3x the hang time off of it.

dartmouth does too, doesn't mean any of the stoners can get it.

My opinion on Michigan tech, is that there are much much better colleges in Michigan and elsewhere.

who let yo ski out

Hahaha

I go to the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown and we have our own ski hill it used to have lifts and shit but they took them down so its kinda just a couple cleared out pointless trails. idk thought it was relevant

Went there this winter, pretty fun. the park is literally 3 small jumps (under 25 feet) and then 4 rows of 4 rails in each row. Kinda weird setup but still fun. Next to the jumps they have one or two rails each. I liked the variety of rails such as a s rail, curving up rail, and of course the regular rainbow, strait, battleship, etc. the hill has two chair lifts and one t bar rope tow thing that two people sit on either side of to go up the hill.
