Meeting nser's / skiers on hill.

I've met a decent bit of you from riding on hood the past few years and have been noticing a trend. Its spring/summer and everyone flocks to Mt. Hood or the other respected late season places. Obviously there are alot of us who end up in the same place. Everyone talks about how connected the NS community is, yet when I'm riding hood I see plenty of you from ns. I personally will wave at you, give props on a trick, or just say what's up and cruise a lap with you just for being a skier. What I'm noticing happen alot more lately is everyone being "too core to reach out" just blank stares from across the lift line or eye contact in the park with a quick look away like its a high school dance or something. Its become a popularity contest/ gotta seem so g on hill you can't talk to anyone let alone make a new shred buddy or two. I love skiing and love riding with people that enjoy it but that seems to be turning into a cliche to ski with friends, now its all about being a snake and trying to make sure you looked cool doing it. I've boarded for years then came to skiing due to how much more legit and fun it was, yet 8/10 times if I'm on hill there's a handful of park rats with their chin to the sky acting as if they're the hottest shit yet in reality they're a dime a dozen burnt out ski bums that hit 19-22 and realized they won't ever make it in skiing so they become arrogant tools that shred so much harder than that 12 year old that was trying a flat box (too bad he wasn't watching your sweet lip front 2 cause he was out having fun with friends) Long story short, talk to the skiers around you, most of us are chill and don't harsh the mood, but if you meet someone that does just take a lap then peace out from them. Lets bring the community of happy fun skiing back not the I'm so hard look at my dick mindset.

agree or disagree all I know is tomorrow Ill be riding and waving at folks saying what's up like it ain't no thang.

people are assholes tbh, I mean I'm kinda guilty of this myself haha. But, at the same time every spring i always meet new homies.

This annoys the hell out of me. I've been a pretty shy dude for a lot of my life, but I started to lose that last season. Then I noticed all the little cliques at my hill never skied with anybody else, the blank stares in the lift-line or lodge, skiing the same run 100 times to show-off for the chairlift, ect.

If you aren't good at park at my hill, people look down on you. Its just how it is. I've met very few people that were down to ski some other part of the hill. Fuck, I've even said "Want to check out the western glades" and kids will completely blow me off to ski with their little group. I'm sure this is a problem in all types of skiing, but we should all be homies. Hoping it improves when I get out west.

idk, at the same time i have a squad i ski with pretty much exclusively because we have compatible skiing/boarding styles and we kinda feed off each others energy.

nobody has to ski with you.

nobody is obligated to be your friend.

Did not say that. Just like op said, a lot of people are too high and mighty to even acknowledge each other's existence.

People are scared that they won't be considered he best skier on the mountain so they just mean mug. It's fucking absurd.

Especially all the kids who try to turn every day riding into a competition then get online and rip on comp skiers. haha wtf. Unfortunately, It's never gonna change though, its ingrained in the "sport".

I'm an introvert in school and most public places, but on the mountain I'm the complete opposite. It seems like a lot of skiers I know are the opposite.

I love it everyone is wearing bikinis and t shirts at the basin then there's the homies hiking the 3 rails in the park wearing black head to toe big ass bug goggles like they are going to melt if they get any sunlight. Everybody different gotta let them do their own thing.

I think with skiing being such an individual sport and pair that with some personalities you'll always get the kids who take themselves and their skiing too seriously to say hi.

I've gotten mixed reactions from nsers and just park skiers in general. I remember riding up my freshman year of college with Hansel, I think that's his username, and just chatting it up and then seeing him later on in the day lapping park and we said hi. It's just dependent on the person. I've had some good vibes from randos riding up Keystones lift even a couple 12 year olds who had me laughing the entire ride up.

It really shouldn't matter if it's your first day in the park or if you're a pro, it's easy to say hi and talk to people but far too many individuals in the world are assholes.

Nothing is worse than a 4 person chair of silence for 6 minutes. I've been on the chair and said how's the day going today and no one says anything or they put headphones back in. It reminds me of when kids used to brag on the chair and you start to think they're og then they get in the park and cant do anything they just hyped up.

Surprisingly this trend disappears with pros, most that I've became homies with or just casually know are all super nice dudes and reach out and talk to others on the hill. This is one of the things that turns an average park skier into an excellent one people skills go so much further than any super fed you do on a flat rail.

Wait.. are all these am riders and wannapros not going anywhere cause of their personalities... most likely.

I've been noticing this a lot more myself. It definitely sucks. Personally I'm terrible at meeting new people and hate talking to strangers. So I can't really blame anyone else. But once I get to know someone. I won't shut up.

I hate when it's with people you already know though, lots of people are too clique-y to ski with other people. Just say hi then ride off. Back home if you say hi. It's just a given that you are now lapping together. Lots of weird vibes out there. Too much drama. Skiing is fun

I ski by myself most days at the home hill. Mainly because I'm old and it would be creepy for me to "make friends" with anyone under 21.

Shit I have been high many a day on the hill but that just makes me more mellow and willing to chill and chat, most days I'm like hey whats up fist bump who you riding with, then either take a lap or say see you in a few laps and shred on, when I smoke I just chill on the knuckle and talk to all the homies and forget what line I was going for ha.

To me if you smoke bud and get reclusive in general its definitely not gonna make you shred better and if its making you an awkward Aaron maybe drink a few brews and try shooting the shit with some people

i think what you're noticing is happening a lot more in life in general. In todays society you are viewed as weird or abnormal if you're in public and you don't stare at your phone. waiting for a bus and try and strike up a conversation with a human being near you and people think you have nothing else better you could do on you're phone/people to talk to. its fucked really. same goes on hill, except its like a big filter where everyone there is essentially there for the same reason. We all like to ski, so you would think it would be that much easier to just approach someone and start talking, but we've all found this not to be true. Only advice i can offer is keep doing you man and if people get vibes out, its their loss and they are probably less happy than you. Stay positive and positive will be attracted to you.

I disagree with this thread, I've been at hood all month and everyday on the hill has been a party, awesome vibes day in, day out. Everybody has their way of spending the day how they want. Ive been riding with a pretty big crew all month and when somebody lands something dope theres always hoots and hollers throughout the park, not only from the people Im with but others in the park too. I havent really noticed any kids acting how you described but I feel what you're sayin. I think everybody just has their crew and skis with who they want.

Just because we all ski doesnt really mean we all have to ski together.

Definitely havent experienced a silent lift ride tho, sounds bunk af

lol I've gotten the silent treatment a few times.

s/o to whoever that blonde skier chick was for being a stuck up bitch, I wasn't even hitting on you or even interested in you, i have a girl who's cuter than yer salty ass...it's just common courtesy to shoot the shit on the lift. I'm so fucking sick of people coming to this place for like 2 weeks out of the year and thinking they own the fucking hill. I live here. Go home if youre gonna be an asshole is what i say...

The NS meet up at loon was amazing. No one was on their phones, I met a ton of new homies and everyone was hanging together and throwing down. When I go to a mountain though it seems like the only people that are willing to talk are gapers and older snowboarders. I tried to say nice trick to a kid who was hiking wachusett and he just gave me a quick glance, took his skis off and began his hike back up. Shits fucked

This is how we know you are probably 14/15. I ski 100 plus days a year and my "squad" isn't always there.

Im 37 and I'm always looking for people to ski with, and I don't care how good they are. You can always switch up your "style" to go out and have fun. You're skiing, go smoke a bowl with someone and get to know why some dude/girl traveled out west to ski.

Even with my "squad" everyone feels the same way. Maybe leave the east coast, grow up, or move west. Being pretentious will get you nowhere in life.

Yo if someone were to come up to me and start a convo id be so stoked. I love meeting new skiers and riding with them. Probably wouldn't approach someone though cause I'm quite the awkward fella.

It's super lame that people are like that. I'm gonna bet it's younger kids? At my home hill you'll get that at night but during the day when children are at school it's usually pretty chill. Maybe I'm making that up? I don't know.

Pretty positive your group of friends is the toolbags hashing the normal mt. Hood vibes. I see so many less locals on hill at this time because of all the folks from Midwest and east coast trying to be so hood. Of course we all yell when you stomp something but we all fucking hate smelling your gypsy selves from 30 feet away. I keep riding though cause I dont mind

May get heat for this but have noticed the further east you are from the more of a douche you are. This stands true for like 80% of them with the handful that are chill they also will say people back home are dicks as well. Its extremely bad with the hipster east coast snowboarders but that hipster mentality is creeping in more and more to the skiing side of things. I miss going to a skate spot and seeing 5 different crews.. ten minutes later we are all sessioning and kicking it. Maybe dipping from the park and hitting the rest of the town in a fat crew. Take that to skiing, how many times have you had a fat crew taking a tree run. Most people don't even leave the park at all

Yeah I could kind of see that. Its always been that way in sun valley for the most part but there are people there who are cool and say high but everyone just thinks there so above everyone. Ive skied bogus and other places and haven't noticed it very much. I hate a lot of boise kids, but ive meet a few skiers from there that are super nice. Maybe because they were ns'ers. I just skied up to them when they were Sesshin a backie booter they built. They were a little wierd for a sec then we talked about my oven mit gloves, because oven mits could fit over the cast for my arm and shit. Anyway long wall of poor gramar and text.

TDLR: I met some ok kids once but some suck dick.

This is my #1 problem with being a skier in the Midwest. We have tree runs and moguls and all kinds of natural hits, but nobody wants to shred outside of the park for more than a run or two.

13692992:Sconnie said:

guilty.

Maybe it's different where you ski but here in BC people are usually pretty approachable, I rarely meet a stranger and shred a whole day with them but will do a lap or two if I ride the chair with them and they seem cool.

I feel you on that. I can't stand when kids who can do more trick say they are better but have never made a turn.

Yeah Its pretty easy to expose a lot of park rats' true ability when they aren't in the air or sliding rails.

I say we start a trend of lines in the park but you dont speed up in between the features so you can see if homie can actually ski.

As a kid who skis 6 days a week about 4 or 5 at least with the mogul team and the rest in the park. I cant stand kids who fucking suck at skiing but i suck at park so it could go both ways

I ski by myself most days too. I'm always trying to make buds on the lift to do some runs/smoke bowls/shoot shit with. Most everyone that I have reached out to has always been really receptive. I'm also a pretty charismatic dude and i'm told that I bring that side out of people, so maybe it's that.

I'm sorry you feel that way. Next time you're in Boise, hit me up. Hopefully we can turn that attitude about Boise kids around!

I've never had a problem with this, really. I've got very limited experience in parks but people on the lift or just stopped on the hill have always been really cool towards me. I'm a pretty outgoing social guy and I'm always trying to meet new skiers to shred with. I've been skiing alongside snowboarders most of my life so i'm always on the look out.

As soon as you ad any sort of competitive edge to any sport, it can get pretty clique-y.

Sorry, but I think you're way off base here. Whether people want to keep to themselves and their crews or mingle among unfamiliar skiers shouldn't matter. Often groups aren't trying to be arrogant, but rather just want to focus on the skiing and the friends they came with. It shouldn't have to be about actively reaching out to other skiers if that's not what they're there for, so calm down with your accusations and let people ski and communicate how they want, worry about yourself and not others. I think half of your problem is your mindset. To me, WCS and the following weeks were so wildly about being happy and skiing with new and old friends, I'd never felt the ski community so strongly until then.

I have to agree with Chubz here, you made this thread calling everybody out for being too cool and too rude to make new friends among skiers, yet you've only proven to insult others. You literally wrote that you hate all of the non-local smelly "gypsies" who come to Hood in May, which is realistically 90% of the kids who come ski that time of year. To me you're insinuating that you've got a personal issue with anyone who's not a local, yet you've convinced yourself that it's just everyone else's attitude that's the problem.

Op, I am so guilty of this myself, however, I reached out and met a few kids this season, and they helped me progress a ton! Skiing with new people is honestly an amazing thing

If anyone reading this skis at Mountain Creek in jersey, If you ever see someone wearing a vintage grey devils hat das me, I'm usually there skipping class by myself or with one friend, so holla at me and gets some laps in, no matter how good you are. Always got the trees on me.

Most of the time, at least out west (I ski Snowbird/Squaw mainly) people are out to have a good time and are tourists. It's interesting to get their stories, and lots are good skiers and you can generally find an alternate route down the mountain or through the park and make a new friend.

It helps a lot when you travel and always have a couch to pass out on and some weed to smoke. I get riding with your #squad but if you're on a 6 pack with 3 friends, or cruising breck park and you have a 5 person #squad and it's a 2 seater I always talk to the person next to me and invite them to ski with us.

It's always easy to dip out.

It was sweet in high school just turning up at the mountain and riding with whoever had a set of twins and wanted to ride some park or jib the mountain.

Being introverted or stoked on your crew shouldn't mean you can't acknowledge other skiers who are stoked on the same thing you are. We aren't obligated to ride together, but for fucks sake we're part of a tiny proportion of the population that likes the same type of skiing - that does mean something.

I don't buy that any "squad" rides so differently than the rest of the skiers on the mountain that you can't even relate to each other. Thankfully any crew I've ever ridden with gets stoked watching anyone else do something sick and isn't afraid to tell them or take laps together.

Or maybe there is just more social anxiety in teenagers where you're from these days and the thought of interacting with someone new in person is just a little too scary.

I ski through the trees in a 4-6 man squad all season as well as hit the park in a squad, if you see me at any of the EPIC pass resorts in Colorado I wear a black and blue thirtytwo jacket with black baggy pants and a blue skull buff and most of the time I will have bud on me hmu if you see me and the homies cruising and you can come bool it thru the trees with us. Also the vibes in Colorado are dope molesquad just kickin it on the benches all the time, kicking it on the chairlift or in the trees smoking a joint or chillum. I dont even know him and Patar screamed whats good up to me on the chairlift and I screamed it back thats the type of love I like to see from the sport.

Sounds like you're the problem. You don't seem very nice...

Way to judge entire groups of people based on the extremely limited sample size you have by never leaving your home.

And I grew up in Washington shredding with a lot of people and we ripped all terrain. I'be taken tree runs and bc runs with a squad of like 10 so idk what you're talking about. Maybe just ride a real mtn somewhere new for once and quit trying to be some imperial local. You talk about other ppl not being inclusive then bitch about how all these non locals are invading and need to leave lol so I doubt the vibes you are putting out are positive. Maybe that's why nobody fucks with you.

You have it ass backwards guy, I am the dude on hill thats kicking it with all the homies from all across the country boarders and skiers, its fun how many people I see on hill. This lead me to create a thread about how the dudes that don't socialize outside their group or themselves are usually the douchey entitled ones that come and foul it up. See me on hill and you'll know I am having a blast everyday and shooting shit with everyone.

Yeah man, I will we gotta a house on the bench a while back so the kind of kids in that area were not fun ones, but there are some sick kids in boise. Might end up going to school there next year so im going to try to go to timberline or boise high.

I don't find myself actively searching out for members when I go skiing, but I try not to cool guy anyone either, when I'm at pc i usually know a large majority of skiers already, but for example when I was at hood for 3 weeks in may I was meeting new people left and right, etc you just gotta be open to everyone instead of overthinking it and accusing people of avoiding you.

Dude do you not see what you are saying here? I lived at the house chubbz is at for a week, didn't know anyone going there and traded 4 30 racks for lodging. These kids are all super chill and out to have fun. Why the hate? I spent my week at hood lapping the park and lapping palmer when it was open. Didn't feel any negative vibes and started almost every day solo shredding and riding the lift with randoms most of which were chill and down to shoot the shit on the lift. You sound like a burnside local trying to kick kids from the midwest out of hood.
