Media and Arts Bullshit

The main thing i am getting out of this is a lot of you are spending waaaaay too much time on this website. Go outside and experience the real world! who cares how old someone is or if someone asks a dumb question or says they dont like your piece you post haha?

All I know is this:

I browsed all the forums when I first joined NS in 2005

Eventually changed to just checking NSG and M&A (and cults)

A year or two ago started pretty much only checking M&A (and cults)

Now I check NSG (and cults) and barely look through M&A

This is probably in part due to the fact that I'm not really filming anymore, but I definitely spent more time in here even before I was into video production/editing. Something changed.

You guys can keep hating on me for calling people out, but I say shit how it is. I may be harsh, but 99% of the time I'm right. I don't purposely start shit like i would in NSG or SG so get off my case, the majority of my posts in M&A are very helpful and sincere, but when a kid posts incorrect, even idiotic advice, i will call them out, period.

Exactly

All you guys are concerning yourself about shit that is happening in that little box on your desk. After all, how can the really experienced guys like slandypoo/varcity, twoods, eheath, dtf, etc seriously concern themselves with the "informative" discussion that goes on here other than trollololing? This will never be Cinema 5d, nor DVX user, or other camera/video specific forum. This is a skiing website after all...

well, let's not get ahead of ourselves here. NOBODY on here is right that much of the time, and that mentality is what leads all of us to argue so much. of course we're all guilty of it from time to time, but we should try to avoid thinking like that.

for sure, i understand. but people make a good point that some kids follow what you say like sheep, we need to get kids to think for themselves (which won't happen if they think you're always right).

unless it's twixtor.

No one's hating on you for calling people out. It's the condescending way you give your opinions that's extremely unhelpful to other kids, aka the twixtor thread the kids asks a questions and then you just respond "don't use it." Hating on kids who want to try new things JUST so you don't have to see the edit lol.

I also remember you sending me a message a while ago after I made a thread about pricing. You told me you charged $10 an hour to edit footage. Either your an idiot or you we're purposely trying to give me bad advice. Clearly I didn't listen. You spend over 2gs on a computer and FCP and then charge 10$ to edit.. bullshit.

Maybe you honestly believe what you wrote above but if you do check your fucking shit cuz your living in the clouds and are a horrible role model for half these kids. When they see you doing dumb shit like above they do it and it's a never ending cycle.

haha, this is why i tend to always browse M&A but rarely post.

I don't want to get worked up over internet arguments.

I think it's hard for anyone to be "right" in media & arts, unless it's specs for camera/ equipment, when it comes to critiques, there are the basic principles we go by but stepping outside those bounds is what makes new styles, if we all did the " right" thing all the time, there would be no creativity

That being said, we all do and try things that we think look good but maybe don't look so good, that's where critique come ins

I just don't like the "are you kidding" or " that's just terrible" posts, if you really think that then give somes reasons why and some possible changes, we all start from somewhere

My 2 cents...

If you ask for a critique...sack up and take it. Don't ask for help if you don't want it. If you think your work is perfect it should probably be in a Film festival rather than the internet. Yes all the words won't be kind but some of us who lend advice should be heard. Some of us have jobs filming and editing.

If you leave a critique, be respectful. Don't just say it's its awful.

I left a message on EHeaths video the other day, I said I liked it but I don't like zooms. He didn't get but hurt and responded saying he can't anymore I'm presuming since he's shooting the fs100. People will have different tastes but alot on here just say they hate it and move along without reasoning.

Lets get a sticky for people looking for critiques. Upload your video on NS, post the link or embed in that thread and then people can leave comments on your video rather than having 30 threads asking for critiques. Lets leave some room to discuss music, cameras (still and motion) lenses, painting, whatever else. If you want to just share your edit sure create a thread, but lets try to categorize the critiques. Ultimately every video will have critiquing but it will cut down some space.

Keep the discussions going. I'm not saying stop discussing. Just stop redundancy and whining. If Arts are an industry you want to work in your going to need some tolerance and ability to listen to others. Your often going to hear things you don't want to about your work, but 90% of the time those watching over you are right. You should have confidence but learn how to take some criticism. I learned the hard way not on NS, in person.

unfortunately getting on the front page doesn't actually mean anything...

after having several videos up there i have come to realize that. i've seen a lot of horrible, horrible videos up there.

Not entirely true. Rothko did it just as right as Georges Braque and Manet and Rembrant. They were all very different.

However, there's a definite line between things that are good and bad in art. It's not all subjective. I thought it was when I started school, and very quickly began to understand otherwise. Yes, some things are a matter of taste, but there is a good and a bad.

Also - those who are saying people are worrying too much about the internet - This is a resource, and people like having that resource. People can come here, get crit, learn about new stuff, get new ideas, and learn different perspectives... if people didn't share information life would be a lot lamer, having everyone figure shit out for themselves. The people that are worried are the people that see MA going downhill and don't want to see that happen, because they want to use is as a resource.

Yea, some people spend too much time here and not enough time shooting or doing things, but that's not everyone. I ski 100+ days a year(/claim) and still enjoy coming back here and reading about new gear, giving crit, reading opinions. So, to me, it does matter, because it's been a good resource in the past and I've learned a lot here.

And I agree with what Jeff_Lo said.

This point implies that NS hasn't been an immature shit show littered with select pockets of intelligence since it's inception. Non-Ski Gabber is the most popular forum on this site. Ya.

Jeff you have made some great points here that I think would unclutter the forum. I think a critique thread and specific sticky threads would be useful and helpful and allow for more discussion and maybe more intelligent comments rather then this sucks.

I have been following this thread for awhile now and got to say this is crazy! Seriously we are all here because we love skiing or snowboarding. Also we love photography or videography, the point is to show what you made and get constructive criticism. There should be no bashing of someone if their edit isn't that great, they are trying to learn and get more and more experience. We all want to make great edits or take great photos, but it also takes constructive criticism to help one another. Do not bash each other if they like one program compared to another. If you ask for critiques expect to get negative feedback on what you could do better but if it isn't bashing your edit, for example your edit is good but i suggest changing this or that, take it positively as someone trying to help you. If they say your edit sucks flat out and don't give you any insightful reasons then just ignore them.

We are all here to help better one another, do not put each other down just because you are better than the other person. Help them out and be supportive!!!!
