Has anyone seen the new Sports Illustrated? The claim John McMurray is going to be the next big freeskier. I think he'll be good, but not as good as some others.

I think Sports Illustrated is directed at an older audience. They arent so much telling us about our sport as they're telling 30 and 40-somethings about what them crazee kids are doin in them stunt ditches with those backwards-forwards skis. (My dad once referred to my twinnies as backwards-forwards skis)

so it's not too far fetched for them to spring for him to go heli skiing in ak or some shit, or mabey island lake lodge,

the point is, he'd be chucking something unreal like a cork 1080 off a 100 ft cliff and probley stomp it,

Backflips onto or off of rails should be kept for comedy purposes only. They should be one of those tricks like a daffy or spread where you only do them (if you can) to make yourself look like an idiot.

mcmurry just throws down with no regard for himself and just does crazy insane stupid shit. the thing is he pulls it off 90 percent of the time, thats what makes him so sick. hes a good skier no doubt, but hes not the best in the game right now and i cant see him being the best in the future either.

From what I've seen of him (SM3 segement), I don't think he's anything too special. His tricks are pretty average, and his style doesn't stand out as anything amazing. If it wasn't for his rail flips I don't think he'd get too much attention, and I think that the only reason he was featured in SM3 was the novelty value of the rail flips (much like girls in ski films, which I don't agree with, but I'm getting off-topic).

Not to take anything away from him though. I'm comparing him to top-class pros here. He's still a sick skier, but to call him 'the next big freeskier' or whatever the title of this thread was is a big over the top.

 
um, i highly suggest not estimating Jon on his SM3 seg, there are like, 5 shots there and all they are are backflips on or off rails. hes got a bunch more and hes got titties in his ski movie!!!

Jon McMurry is insane aswell as totally sick !! In the latest issue of powderhound - he does 20ft road gap with a backflip and lands on a rail on the other side of the road and slides another 30ft to a smooth-ass landing

um.. i didnt really like his segment in strike, i dunno theres just so many other people that r better than him, it makes him seem so in segnificant, ya, but he could still kick my ass hands down... but i wouldnt say he'll be the next tanner.

Jon has mad guts and will do almost anything that is absolutely insane. So you would think that he has no stylie because he just does crazy tricks. Well if you watch him in strike 3 you will see him do the sickest alley oop flatmute and some backflips that are soooo stylie. but, he still does huck himself and probably sooner then later he will end up with a pretty bad injury. Or maybe not

dude its not the shit that he does in hte videos that makes him so great. he's only been in PBP and MSP for a year now. His over all riding ability is amazing. He can do all he shit, and he doesn't second guess himself. McMurray and Kozody are both nuts. Jon will be an amazing free skier, not that he already isn't. but he can do it all. hes gonna help start bringing good park tricks to amazing lines. not just on hit but say 3 or four big cliffs in one line. he's dope. Sports Illustrated has their shit right.

Jon's definately got good potential, but i cant say whether i think he's the next tanner,he's crazy and does some sick shit, hopefully his seg in focus will show more than the stuff in front line

it's weird seeing all these people that don't know someone talk so much about him. mcfur is the shit, he's part of the original LCP, you just can't fuck with him. none of you know his skill, none of you really know what he is about. he does silly crazy shit like backflips to rails, backflips off 2 story houses, backflips off rails, sure... but he can also backflip off an 80 foot cliff in the middle of a first descent down a nasty line. what you people don't know is what is hurting you. don't judge the folks that you have never met, it's not fair. just because you saw one shot of someone does not mean that is a fully accurate representation of EVERYTHING they are about. just chill the fuck out and watch as fur rocks the industry...
