Maybe eastcoast isnt so far behind afterall

i just heard a rumor that sunday river and killington are already going to start competing for the earliest opening date, and that could mean as soon as this thursday.

East coast opens before my home mountain and always closes before my home mountain. My mountain opens mid-late Novemeber. I have powder though, it's worth the wait.

the weather looks awesome actually, i know for fact the snowguns are setup and ready to fire at sunday river and that killingtons are firing the 13th at latest. The thursday opening was just a rumor i heard that probably isnt true, but who knows. either way, it wont be long.

I had to do a quick look back at the date of the post, just incase it was another 2002 thread, but since it isnt, Thursday is impossible, it wont be for another few weeks. If they start the 13th, there is no way they could have any sort of a base by thursday to run a groomer over it.

just a rumor, i find it a hard one to believe too. however, last year it didnt take them many days at all of snow blowing to open.

i know that stowes trying to open thanksgiving weekend and my home mountains lucky if it opens by christmas break

I have looked at the weather and Vermont is supposed to get snow on tuesday beginning at 2am. supposed to snow all day except for the warm part of the day between 2pm and 4pm (rain) and then back to snow until around 8pm.

i would guess that the resorts will start opening around the first of november. sugarbush is predicted middle of november (projected opening day in 42 days) and sunday river usually does a ski free day on halloween if you are wearing a costume.

no way this thursday, they haven't started blowing yet, i doubt they can really get much in 3 days. but fuck this, i have to go to a wedding this weekend but if killy's open next weekend i'm hitting that shit up

true or not im sooo pumped for killington. i just started going to school at castleton. so im about 30 mins away....

cant wait

two things.

one, I swear to god if sunday river opens up on thursday, I'll jizz all over myself.

two, I just realized. The rail jam in Jay, I saw you. I was the kid there wearing the white tall tee and you came up to me and told me that I was representing the tall tee. Hah, you were slaying, meanwhile I was just hitting the fs swups and 270 out. hah

exactly.

none of the mountains have even started up the snow guns, so opening later this week is deff not gonna happen. if they do start blowing snow this week, which the weather forecast seems to suggest they will, the mtns still need a few weeks of solid blowing before they can open. look for halloween weekend as an opening weekend, probably the earliest if the weather cooperates. i believe killington is shooting for the next week or 2 after that tho, so sorry not this thurs, but not too far away

Biggest thing is the snowmaking capacity of East Coast resorts compared to out West.

That is how east coast gets the season started.

well we just have short groomers and an excessive number of snowguns, all we have to do is blow huge piles, spread them out with a cat, and we're done. then it takes a few feet of natural stuff to open up the good mtns and trees and stuff but the east usually opens early weather permitting
i skied on october 30th a few years ago and it was my best ec groomer day of the year, we'd gotten like a random storm up at killy, they spread it out, opened a few lift, and it was banger

Most of you are too young to remember the old school Killington days... following the first or second couple nights of snow making the 4x4 pickup truck was taking people up the hill.

Fuck having to make snow. 2-4 feet of snow is predicted above 8000 feet here in the Sierras. That is supposed to fall Tuesday afternoon and stop sometime Wednesday moring. Yes, in mid-October 2-4 feet of snow is predicted to fall in less than 24 hours. Holy shit I am stoked.

But will Sunday River open with downloading? Or top to bottom opening only?

If SR won't open with downloading, that negates the benefit of the midstation.
