Matt Groening says where Springfield is

It's been kinda clear for a while now. He went to my high school in portland, and many of his characters are named after streets in NW portland. Burnside, flanders, lovejoy, quimby etc.

This is on the sidewalk at my high school

I always though it was the mass. Springfield, but that's the only springfield I ever really knew.

lol i thought this was common knowledge. I like how they act like its a big reveal, stupid reporters dont know how to use a search engine lol.

hey i go to lincoln.

anyway, yeah, definitely takes place in oregon. also springfield elementary is based off my old elementary school.

in the simpsons movie i recall there being a scene where the camera zooms down from a satellite view and i thought it went down somewhere near mass.

Yeah I remember that episode, mostly because I lived in Springfield, MA- and Mike Scully went to West Springfield so I figured it was Mass... Oh well. My mind remains unshattered by this revelation hahaha

Inkindof wish he didn't say anything. Buttt since its so old now it's not a huge deal. That sidewalk art is cool

I was always most familiar with springfield mass myself, but I did know it was supposed to be in Oregon. drove through there a few times. Isn't there a Springfield in every state in the US though? Wasn't that the point?

Lol. Springfield's just a suburb for Eugene. It has more strip MALLS than anything.

Medford, Oregon however, is really just white trash and strip clubs. Emphasis on the white trash part. holy shit....

Matt Groening is from Portland, but he kept it secret so people around the country could think it was based on THEIR OWN springfield.

...when in reality the show wasn't even based on Springfield, Oregon. He just named it that.

have any of you ever been to springfield mass? there is no way anyone can think the simpsons is based on springfield mass if they have been there

yessss.....I grew up in Hartford.

It was just the first springfield that came to mind. Sorry I didnt break it down thoroughly in my head. Its not like the multiple plots involving changing geography and conflicting locational clues helped at all. It was pretty obvious the show's "Springfield" was more meant to be an Anytown, USA as opposed to literal Springfield, OR.

I'm kinda glad it's not. As a Springfieldian, I feel like the show has just had a shroud of sketchiness and shame lifted from it. I've never been to Springfield Oregon, but it must be better than the one in Mass as this place is the grundle of the northeast. The only good thing here is the Mardi Gras. And me, of course. I'm pretty rad on Wednesdays and Fridays between 3-8pm.

The reason he chose the name of a town that most states have is because The Simpsons is, among other things, a criticism of American culture. He's making fun of us all.

I thought it was Springfield Vermont. A few years back they had a video contest between all the Springfields in the US to see which one had the best intro or whatever, and Vermont won. Can't find anything on it.

Well the show is written by a bunch of Harvard graduates. The reason the show is so good is because its funny on different levels. You can watch the good seasons every 5 years and you'll notice a slew of satire you were previously too young to understand, assuming you're relatively young. It isn't "serious," it's good writing. Or at least, it used to be?
