Mark abma will save the world

Abma is doing a good thing. yea climate change is bound to happen but hes trying to not prevent it, but atleast slow it down. if we are heading towards a much warmer climate the best we can do to keep the snow is to do things like abma and help slow it down atleast a litttle bit.
everyday of skiing counts.

I like the green initiative that mark is taking (seriously, its taken this long to get here?) but bamboo skis as "eco friendly" is a stretch considering all the toxic resins used to produce them and the topsheets. Not to mention glues and shit like that that hold everything together.

Smiths idea of using recycled surgical plastics for goggle frames is pretty neat though.

Anyone know anything more about the HH stuff?

The best option for going green is simply reducing comsumption though...stop buying new gear every year! Reducing the demand = less production = real 'green' savings. just my $0.02...

So if something is inflated...then we should just keep on inflating it...ya, good game plan noob

Pretty much. I also heard that Nicolas Muller was working on creating products with Burton that are either directly recyclable into new products, or straight up decomposable, with the end result having little to no waste.
And at the risk of sounding like a hippy- the problem with the current consumer market (including the ski industry) is that there needs to be huge growth every year, creating an endless demand for new products and waste...we need to find a good solution for a shift into a plateaued market/economy where everybody can all still make a living, but with less impact on our environment.

Exactly.

We always strive for more and more growth...why can't we be happy with things being just good/stable?

nevermind, i thought this thread was in response to solly's new bamboo cored ski. now i had more than two seconds on NS and read the press release on 1 step. mea culpa.

I still dont see whats so wrong with cutting down trees??

There is more forest land now than when the west was settled. The trees are going to die one way or another through fire, wind, drought, insects, disease..and so on. Canada's forests are dieing off because of lack of fire or management.

So lets remember...

-trees are not going to sequester carbon long term (but it is nice having "eco friendly" people pay for it)

-harvesting trees is like any natural disturbance except it supports the economy

Depends on the type of management and even then, managing forests does more to hurt the ecosystem than a natural disaster. you are often taking much more out of the system than would happen if the forest had a fire or blowdown event. Its all very complex.

Not that I have a solution though.

I think what he is doing is awesome. Its a start.

Regardless of how you feel about climate change its stupid not to try and conserve, as long as its done rationally. Plus everyone hating on bamboo cores, I started riding a ski with bamboo core (ON3Ps) this season and it was one of the best things that has happened to me. It gives the ski a super damp playful feel with lots of rebound and pop. Not to mention bamboo is a grass and regenerates way faster than any wood product.

this is true

I think its awesome what hes doing as well. I would like to see some mainstream skiers get more touring or hiking for their lines considering jet fuel isnt the best

why doesn't anyone realize that Liberty was the first to put bamboo in ALL their ski cores over 3 years ago. I don't know if this is true, but I heard that the salomon only has bamboo in the topsheet and not in the core. i could be wrong, but it seems like another instance of a big corporation copying a smaller independent innovative company like liberty, but they have the marketing dollars to make a big splash. Liberty was the 1st company to become 100 percant wind power and use bamboo as much as they can. this is just a jump on the bandwagon type deal.

I love my liberty larose pros in the park...the bamboo is dope for sure.

As far as salomon going green with Abma's ski..ehhh not so much.

climate change happens but as people who have affected it, we can reverse or atleast stop what we have done.

... lib tech, arbour, etc etc etc etc yet another trend started by the snowboard industry.

go do your self a favor and watch Bikecar.

I think I missed something. Mark Abma is making bamboo skis to combat global warming? Somebody fill me in.

Wow, nice priorities kid. "Fuck the environment and the planet, what's really important is to continue promoting rampant consumerism!"

I don't believe in human caused global warming, and I don't think we can change our environment right now. I do believe in clean air and natural spaces. Whenever we try to regulate the environemt through direct interference with other things we wreck it. Fortunately the environmental movement is at the stage where we are only changing the way we as humans operate to reduce emissions/pollution/whatever, meaning we're not going to screw anything up too badly just yet.

Thank you Mr. Abma for keeping my trees in the forest and my air clean.

Does anyone know what the biggest greenhouse gas is? You might be surprised.

just cause climate change will happen doesnt mean we can treat our earth like shit. it is proven that in the past the climate has gone high and low but that doesnt mean we should go builld some factories and drive our cars everywhere we go.
