Debating whether or not to fight for my country. everything in civilian life seems miniscule in the scheme of things. What are your opinions on the military and why.
 
if you feel the need, do it. but don't rush into anything.

also a point of interest should be that every current and former marine that I know says "don't join the Corp, join a different branch"
 
seeing how i have friends and family in all branches of the military i respect what they're doing and the sacrifices they're making but i would never join under any circumstances
 
I would say go for a more technical branch, sure you work out a lot but I've been in the Navy almost a year now and through my training I earned an associates in applied science. While getting a paycheck.

It's gonna be a bit harder to get in whatever branch you try for because of Obama's military cuts. And there is a greater chance you won't see active duty. So basically it's the perfect time to join now.
 
Never in my eternity would I ever stand and risk my life for a country like this one. Don't join my man, war isn't the answer
 
If you really feel this way then go and volunteer in a third world country and experience different cultures and traditions or hell even volunteer in your own country.

The war that you would be fighting in is a ridiculous war with no purpose. You are not fighting for your friends and family like you would have been in WW2 for example.
 
Enjoy "fighting for your country" sitting in a barracks in Pendleton when the U.S. gets out of Afghanistan.
 
try living in southern california in san diego... you will loose respect for them quite fast.

 
Do it. But do it for yourself. I work for an ex-marine hes a really nice guy and I respect him. Guy talks about the hazings and punishments if they were the time of his life.
 
FUCKING DO IT! I'm in the process of enlisting right now getting paper work n shit together with my recruiter. The Corps is the only way to go in my opinion if you're planning on joining the military (I respect all branches but In my opinion if you're going to do it, do it right). Who cares if you have to give up 4 measly years of your life after high school you will be 100x more mature than any kid you graduated with and have life experiences many will never have. Sure many things about military life suck (PT waking up early being away from friends/family for extended periods of time ect) but just think of the military family you will have from the rest of your life. I have 3 Marines in my family and multiple friends and they all share a brotherhood with anyone the meet that has served in the Corps is unlike anything you will see from any other branch. Theres a saying along the lines of "there is no more noble choice in life than that of becoming a United States Marine" and that will be recognized for the rest of your life when applying for jobs and talking with people in general. Look into it, see if its for you and if you think it is, take the opportunity to the fullest extent.
 
i think the only nobler path you could take is curing a blind lady and feeding 5000 people with a single loaf of bread (you have to turn the water into wine too). However, only jesus has so far been successful. But USA gobbles Christ's chaud like no other. So asides from being Jesus, Marines is pretty noble. However your decision sound poorly thought out, maybe you should take some time to mature and find out who you are and what you want. Considering that you only considered the Marines as a way to better yourself goes to show you are fairly young and confused.
 
Civilian life doesn't need to be "minuscule." Fighting for your nation isn't the only noble and worthwhile way to spend your life. That being said, my father attended West Point and served for about 7 years in the Army Corps of Engineers following college. I'm not sure why he chose to leave, but something tells me that military service didn't really speak to him so he went to find work elsewhere and start a family.
 
Don't do it.
If you make the stupid decision to do it, at least do it right and join the Air Force. Get a easy desk job and learn something. Sleeping in a muddy hole in the woods after you walk 10 miles with 60 pounds on your back isn't as fun as it sounds.
Lastly you probably won't "fight" for your country when you join the military with an open contract
 
Are you kidding me? My stepdad was a former Marine and all he talks about nowadays is going back to fight for his country... He misses being their so much and he always talks about the memories he had. My brother is also in ROTC training at Norwich university as a rook and he wants to be a marine. Sure bootcamp/rook training will be a bitch but it all comes out good in the end.
 
there isnt any snow where the marines are going to send you, do you really want to go out in the world and kill people? Think of that time as an opportunity to go shred powder or instead volunteer/work some where else that helps people without violence and + judging by your ns name I bet you like the green? uncle sam wont approve. didnt your mommy or daddy or fellow shredder ever tell you that violence isn't the answer
 
I would join. My dad was a marine and said it was the best thing that's had happened to him. I think the same thing about civilian life as well.
 
Growing up in relative vicinity to Camp Pendleton and the Navy bases of greater San Diego I have known a lot of sailors and marines from enlisted guys to admirals and colonels. For many people it is a great career or experience opportunity and way to escape their hometown and help pay for school down the road.

Also be aware though that you're entering into a professional employment contract. And this brings up the topic of where military employees fit within our society as is discussed (by a former officer) in the following articles.

I've always wanted to be a Marine since I have been spoon-fed pretty much everything in my life, including becoming an Eagle scout. I know that I am joining just don't know if I want to do it before or after college. I'd try becoming an officer either way, but so far I am leaning towards after college.
 
I think the mountains of Afghanistan are presently occupied by some people who wouldn't take particularly kindly to newschoolers
 
This is probably not the best place to find a legit answer. A lot of kids here and hippie tree hugging pussies that were told to hug it out as children. If its something you are mentally and physically capable of doing and you see it as an honor its definetly something to look into. No one can tell you which branch is best for you though. You need to do your research and find the best fit for you and what you want to do.

Navy: "Marines suck, they're just a department of the Navy."

im a huge anti war liberal but yeah marines are the way to go if you dont want to be something with more prestige like a pilot or officer. you will be changed. and it is a huge fucking favor to all of us. semper fi
 
could just go all out and join the legion...just a thought.

A great guy that I work with was in the Marine Corps for almost 30 years. His advice is "if you want to learn to kill someone, join the marines so you learn to do it right. If you want to learn to do anything remotely applicable outside the military, join a different branch."
 
I have a teacher who is a ex-Marine and used to be a Martial Arts instructor for the Corps for 20 years, and he has semper fidelis tattooed all over him, and is just an all around good guy. He chews us out for having bad morals and being idiots and stuff, but that just show that Marines live by the ethos they're taught. Plus it's a really prestigious title and organization, my mom says she can spot a marine by the way they carry themselves. I've always wanted to be one since I was a little kid tho. always looked up to em
