A former baseball hopeful has died after being bitten 19 times by a black widow spider.

Jeff Seale, 40, from Erie, Colorado noticed the bites on his foot two weeks ago, but only complained of feeling ill shortly before he died on Sunday.

Speaking to Fox News, his sister Stephanie Baum said Mr Seale worked at a horse stable and speculated he may have picked up the spider there.

Bitten: Jeff Seale died after being bitten by a black widow spider

Speaking to Fox News Denver, Mrs Baum said: 'I think it's definitely related.

SEVEN DIE A YEAR FROM THE BLACK WIDOW

The black widow, or Latrodectus, gets its name from the insect's gruesome mating ritual - females often eat the males after the act.

Despite having an extremely venomous bite, the poison rarely kills humans.

But due to their small size and worldwide distribution, the species kills more than any other spider globally - with around seven people a year dying in the U.S. from black widow bites.

'He was in really good health up until that point [that he died].'

'He worked at a horse stable in the evenings, and he very well could have brought one of the spiders home in his things, or picked up some stuff from one of the horse sheds and brought one of the things home.'

The station reported the former high-school baseball star 'became obsessed' with the spiders after being bitten, even resorting to having his house gassed to try and eliminate the insects.

According to Boulder County Coroner's Office it could be 4 to 6 weeks before an official cause of death is announced.

According to health experts death from black widow bites is rare.

In his home town, Mr Seale is well known among students on the Fairview High School baseball team.

Deadly: The black widow kills around seven people a year in the U.S.

Speaking to the station, Brian Sture a graduating senior said: 'When you assess that type of tradition, you definitely look up to him.'

Seale was a real baseball prospect, playing for the University of Texas before being drafted by the Mets.

According to dailycamera.com, the local community has already planned a series of tribute baseball games to honour Mr Seale.

Organisers of the Legion A State Tournament On Thursday plan to speeches and a minute's silence during the opening ceremony.

Mr Seale`s nephew Chase Baum will then throw out the first pitch.

There will also be a memorial service on Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church in Boulder.

i thought if you got bit by a black widow you were dead. 7 a year doesnt seem like much. thought thats why so many people were afraid of them. but yeah fuck spiders

Na actually a bite from them is barely ever fatal. Not that it isn't serious, but as a rule, a bite is not a death sentence.

How do you not seek medical attention knowing that you were bitten 19 times by a black widow? Call me crazy, but that's where I'd be headed before doing anything else, just to be sure, to be monitored. The video even said his parents urged him to call 911 and he brushed it off.

So what he doesn't know what they're called..

The man died tragically, and you post a picture of Spyder killer pants.

at the grocery store i used to work at, my friend who worked in the produce section cut open a box of mangoes and emptied it, only to find a black widow in the bottom. so naturally, we took the box and poked the spider with a stick, then walked through the store with the box to show all the other staff and some customers we knew. then we showed or boss and put the box in the garbage compactor

that makes us sound like we were ten, but i dont care. it was so cool.

I got bit by a black widow on my big toe last february. It bit me when I put my foot in a shoe barefoot that I hadn't worn in a really long time.
Anyway, I didn't think much of it since I took an entomology course and know that as a healthy adult, likely nothing would have happened. But... what did happen was that it was the middle of winter and I had to keep wearing shoes and what not. About 4 days later it really started to hurt. Sadly, this was a weekend and I didn't want to go to the ER. By the time I went to the doctor on monday, my entire big toe was purple and it looked like I had frostbite. That and I was starting to get blood poisoning and all the veins in my foot had turned dark red.
I was put on antibiotics for 2 weeks and couldn't get my foot in a shoe for about a week or a ski boot for 2 weeks. It sucked walking around in Mammoth in February with 1 flipflop on.
But alas, if you get bit, check it out regardless. They probably won't do anything, but I probably could have prevented a lot of pain if I had gone in on the friday before.
