Mammoth in May (advice)

So I'm planning to road trip down to Mammoth in the spring. Where are the best/cheapest places to stay around the mountain? I'll have a car so a bit of distance isn't an issue. Any other tips/suggestions are welcomed, thanks!

We always camp in may, its free and decently warm and then poach the mammoth inn hottub/pool and use the showers.

I've camped in two places, it depends on how much snow they have really. There is a scenic loop right before mammoth, after the town but before the first parking area you cant miss it and you just turn off that road somewhere and find a nice flat area. The other place I've camped is right off the highway and instead of turning left to go to the town of mammoth you take a right and drive up into the hills there. Im not sure how "legal" the camping is but my buddy camped for a month two years in a row in the two different places and never got hassled.

Hope that helps. The mammoth inn isnt too expensive in the spring but I wouldn't expect to pay less than like $100 a night.

Yeah if its super warm and their snowpack is low (which I believe it is this year) the scenic loop is the place to be, its like 3 mins from town, 3 mins from mammoth. The spot out by the highway is definitely 4-5 degrees warmer but you're 10 mins from mammoth and 3 or 4 min from town.
