Maier Injured

I know not many people on here are real interested in racing myself included, but I think it is important to mention that Hermann Maier was in a serious motorcycle accident. Apparently it is serious enough that it is still questionable whether he will be able to keep his leg, let alone win gold in the Olympics. I think it is tremendously sad to see anything like this happen to such a great and talented athlete, in any sport or discipline of skiing.

I dont like racers, but at least they arent snowboarders. I think this will kill skiing in Europe if he cant ski anymore, so this is a bery bad thing...

it definatly wont kill skiing in europe, as there are many other sick skiers in europe (racers, freestlyers especially, and freeskiers, like candide, mickael, etc). so saying that it will kill skiing in europe is absurd, but it definatly sucks.

appskier??? why do you hate snowboarders and racers? yes, some of them do have an attitude, but so do some freeskiers...like yourself. do wahtever you want to do has long as your having fun doing it

Harvey kicks ass!!!

Ahh shit man that's horrible! He was a fucking animal! I got to ski with him at a fall race camp in Colorado and he was the coolest person!

Where did you read this?

i can't stand racers. i really don't mind snowboards. sorry to affend some people but racers, cut in chairlift line, wear spsndex, race threw the park and run you over, the have no respect for others. sorry if this does not apply to u

I usually don't like racers, but after Maier's crash in the olympics, I have respect for him. He was back in a week and won a gold medal. That says something.

not trying to defend racers, but the things you listed, half that shit apply for newschoolers too.

a lotta guys ski through the park fast in there runs, just cuase there good skiers, not cuase they are trying to be a racer.

ive seen a lot of newschoolers cut in line, why? becuase they are young, and have an attitude.

European skiing will definitely not die... theyve got guys like Guerlain Chicherit and Candide and Seb Michaud and many many others... its just that the ameircan ski media doesnt really recognize them.

ok, then Atomic will die. He is their main skier. and racing will defenitely take a blow.

'I can fly.'-Mr.Hopper, my english teacher

i don't think that it's going to efect atomic that much considering how there one of the best racing comp. but that one guy did have apoint about the racers not respecting anybody, one of my friends was sliding a rail in beaver creek and a racer came flying down the park and hit the guy he almost broke his arm as a result. they all fly down the mountian like they own it and then in the lift line they all act like there better then everybody cause they race.

Atomic will not die. That's an absurd assumption. They sponsor thousands of racers, including essentially the entire Austrian team. The Austrian has incredible depth, many of which are better skiers than Herman. Maiher is just as good as Maier.

'Dumb man gives wife grand piano...smart man gives wife upright organ'

thats to bad that maier hurt himseklf, he defintetly wasnt my favorite skier, but he was really good and it is sad when anyone gets injured like that

I Am Not A Losre

Skiers don't belong in the park.

Skiing is gay and it will be gone in a couple years.

Freeskiers are just trying to copy snowboarding.

Obviously I don't believe any of this, and I'm sure you all got really pissed when I said it, so why the hell are you trashing racing with ridiculous stereotypes such as those I listed above that we are often plagued with. Sure some racers are assholes, lots of people in this world are assholes just because that is their personality and way of looking at the world, but that certainly doesn't mean all racers are. If I were new to freesking, I would have read some of the above posts like those by Appskier and Laxbrave and would have assumed that all freeskiers are assholes because that is how you are coming off by saying dumb things like that. Drop the stereotypes and prejudices and just go out there and have a good time rather than trying to trash everyone you can.

And by the way, European skiing and Atomic aren't going anywhere, don't worry.

rex thomas is on the atomic team, saying atomic will die or whatever is quite possibly one of the stupidest things ive ever heard, right after skiiing in europe dying.

i am sorry, i should have thought twice about what i said. i feel really sorry for the racer that got hurt, from now on i will have more respect for racers

anjelica, SORRY

Racers look sooooo queer with their spandex covered up by those hockey shorts! lol I just had to say that I hate that look.

Saying skiing in europe or that atomic will die is a really bad statement. 1st havent you ever watched races like kizbuhl(i know i speeled it wrong) or any other big race look at how huge the crowd is then look at who wins and there is almost always someone skiing atomics. and the austrian team dominates in europe.

'I dont want to sound queerish but unicorns kick ass.'- Guy from orgazmo

i watched kitzbuhl on OLN. i watched a bunch of other races too. the people worship herman maier.

'I can fly.'-Mr.Hopper, my english teacher

Atomic will def not die. They make some of the best quality skis (non twin tips) on the market. I rode on there 10.20 last year a bunch of times. I dont think they are going anywhere. And dont bitch on real racers. If you think that I hate racers. I have had personal experiance with the worst of them. But the professional racers are great. That sucks about Maier.

One thing you've got to remember is that the ski scene in europe is totally different than in North America. Over there, racing is king and always will be king. The athletes are treated like gods.

The ski industry is still driven by racing. That's where they make their most money, and that's what they develop the majority of their skis for. All skis are offspring of race skis, just with some small adjustments.

You can call racers names all you want, and say how gay they are or whatever but it serves no point. Would you honestly go up to Alberto Tomba and tell him that he looks gay in his DH suit, no you wouldn't, because he would break you in half!

Anyways, i don't see the point in ripping on others. Racers could say about freestylers that all they do is make ticket prices go up (which is true, because hill's need to recoup the cost of having to take out the extra liability insurance...and trust me, that isn't cheap)

G-Dubs and Yeti have it exactly right. We do not need this bickering and argueing over the different aspects of skiing. We should all band together and respectmeach other because each aspect of the sport is difficult in its own way. Plus, saying that ALL racers are 'assholes' is somewhat absurd. That is judging a whole group of people based on the ignorance of a select few. Technically, i could say that all people are ass-holes, because a few people are actually assholes. But this is far from true. The sport of skiing does not need this in-sport bickering and hostility. We should all unite and respect each other based on the fact that we are all similar. Wether we are ski-boarders, racers, big mountain skiers, or jibbers, we are all riding 2 planks.

This was written in an article On Mountatain bike.com and I saved it because it applies to the different styles of skiing so well. I have no problems with and nothing against any style of skiing, but i agree with what the article says.

'Can't we all just get along?'

Ah, the brilliant words of Rodney King, trying to convince everybody to play nice and stop the LA riots that were triggered by events stemming from his beating at the hands of LAPD officers. This one's for all you bike-type Rodney King wanna-be's who write in to tell me that I shouldn't make fun of singlespeeders, and Zap shouldn't be critical of Freeriders and Matt shouldn't be critical of XC racers:

'We should all work together and get along - we're all mountain bikers, after all,' One reader wrote. Yup. And the Dems and Repubs and Jeffords are all politicians, so they should work together. Cats and dogs should get along because they're both mammals. F1 and NASCAR fans should play nice. Men and women, clowns and mimes… You can find common links between all of them, so they should all get along, right?

DH guys love the speed. Freeriders love the stunts. XC guys are after the efficiency and fitness. I still can't figure the singlespeeders, but I can say that the tech geeks love the product, endurance freaks love testing their ability to withstand fatigue, and racers love the competition. The point is, sure, we all use the mountain bike, but we all use it as a means to a different end. Every mountain biker looks for and gets something different from the sport, and likely can't understand why any of the other users is so passionate about whatever it is that they pursue and get from turning the pedals. Mountain biking has something to offer to just about everyone, which is part of what makes it so cool. If mountain biking delivers what you need, great. If you're holding out for all mountain bikers to stand together and be supportive of each other regardless of differences, you're going to be waiting for a while, no doubt.

Can't wait? Join Alcoholics Anonymous or some other, similar group that offers meaningless, baseless support, compassion and harmony among its members for no apparent reason other than their one common activity….

dude, he was really cool. I respect him a whole lot. He was a bricklayer before The austrian team picked him up. He didnt train all his life, and was such a natural. You gotta give him some respect for that

---If I lived back in the wild west days, instead of carrying a six-gun in my holster, I'd carry a soldering iron. That way, if some smart-aleck cowboy said something like 'Hey, look. He's carrying a soldering iron!' and started laughing, and everybody else started laughing, I could just say, 'That's right, it's a soldering iron. The soldering iron of justice.' Then everybody would get real quiet and ashamed, because they had made fun of the soldering iron of justice, and I could probably hit them up for a free drink.---

I read in a local paper today that his kidney is in fact fine, and he WILL walk again. Apparently he is not nearly as badly injured as they had thought. They did not speculate whether he would ski again, but his general health will be fine. So I guess that's good news.. or better news anyway.

Matt

I don't doubt that he will be back. He hasn't done everything that he wants to, so i think he will come back no matter what.

If Stemmel can come back from what happened to him, Maier can come back for sure :-)

geez, why do you right in such long posts. make a couple shorter ones, then im more likely to read them. I guess your right about the racing still driving the industry though.

uumm...then it just looks like i am a post miner. :-)

I 'right' in one message because it is one message. Is it really that different whether you are reading one or three posts? No, it makes no difference.

Also, i would run the risk of having my post split up by other people posting which would make it difficult to read it.

So, anyways, it's not changing, and no one is forcing you to read anything.

I think that if there is someone that can get through such a bad injury, that's Hermann Maier. I tell you, all DHers look like trains when they come down the mountain, but he has something different, that makes him look way stronger than the rest. I wish him a fast recovery, for him and for the skiing world (us included).

Team officials have not ruled out him competing in the olympics. His condition has improved greatly. theres an article at www.skinet.com

digging deep into ns history are we?

i had too look up hermann maier's crash before i realized what was going on. . .
