Macbook sound not working HELP

the audio on my computer isn't working. the white bar with the speaker pops up but i don't hear the poppy noise when i press up/down volume. i can't hear music from itunes or video online. the speakers work when i am in a guest account and in the login screen but not in my own account. i am running snow leopard. can anyone help me fix this??
 
i've done that multiple times and nothing has changed.
should i run the battery until it dies and then fully recharge it?
 
go to system prefs> sound> output

check its output is the comp speakers, (internal) and also its not muted
