Mac Troubles....

Whats up guys. The bottom line is, my MacBook Pro's harddrive is full.

I've never had issues up until recently when i got a gopro and started doing editing/moving the files onto my computer. Do most filmers have this problem and resort to portable harddrives, or am I doing something wrong?

From what I can tell, it's pretty much impossible to keep all your footage on your computer, so filmers... how the hell do you work around this?

thanks guys, +k

yeah this is what i've been doing

IMPORTANT QUESTION.

so, i import my movies into imovie (i selected move files, not copy, so that i wouldn't use up double the space on my harddrive), then i copy the sections of the movies that i want to use and paste them into the project that i am working on. once done with that, i select the full movie and delete it from imovie simply by hitting the delete key.

is that the equivalent of putting the full movie in the trash, or is it saved somewhere in imovie. and if it is saved somewhere in imovie, if i find the file and trash it, will i still be able to use the clip i copied from it?

so basically what i'm asking is

is it possible to take a section of a movie and have it in imovie to use, but then delete the movie off of my computer to save space?

not directly.

what you can do is get the section you want, export that, and then erase everything and pull up that piece in imovie. if that makes sense.

pm me if you need any more help

the same thing happened to me but about half of the hard drive was filled with videos i put into trash. Try emptying your trash for a temporary solution.

yeah i know i've done that

i'm really just searching for a way to take a long gopro video, move a clip from it onto imovie, but then delete the rest of the video entirely from my computer.

iMovie is a program which uses the native file. You have to keep the native file until you export a full edit or something, then you can get rid of all the clips you used to make it. I'm surprised that you would purchase such an expensive computer without basic computer knowledge. That machine is useless and you're videos will certainly suck if you don't take the time to become proficient.

Also, you could clear up a ton of space if you convert and compress the original files. GoPro clips are huge right out of the camera.

use an external hard drive to store your footage and imovie projects/events. just plug it in to edit and whatnot and you can save all that space without deleting anything

get an external hard drive and save the video files to that. you can get a thunderbolt one for very fast data transfer

Make sure your laptop supports thunderbolt some of the older ones don't.

If you got it recently it shouldn't be a problem but there is a chance yours isn't thunderbolt ready.

i have basic computer knowledge, i've just never had to edit or even watch videos using imovie before.

thank you for the advice though

haha, def. get an external man. I store all my footage on there. I've filled up a 1tb, a 500gb, and just purchased a 3tb to back them up

external hard drive also when buying future computers look for one that will have more space. My old mac filled up quick.
