Mac Help?? reformat

Yo NS,
so i recently did a reformat on my mac, to get my computer running fast and clean for my new school year.
bad news is, i bought my macbook pro with a 500gb hard drive, and before the reformat i had 420gb free. now after the reformat, its says i only have 299gb free. little freaked
any ideas?

The partition size was wrong when you erased it. Go to applications/utilities/disk utility and make sure your partition is using the entire drive.

Also, did you by chance make 2 partitions and one is reserved for windows?
