M&A stoke

I dunno, i feel like were miscommunicating.

The shot im talking about, you pan the camera up to follow the biker as he hits a little jump and i thought it was too jerky and you shouldve left the shot static.

I believe he's referring to the clip at 0:42, on the last jump(there might actually only be one)

the way you sort of follow the rider with the tripod, you follow him with the tilt upwards, and then you move it down a bit as he does, just kinda looks a bit strange, a lot of people seem to do that though, I've just never been a fan, but I wouldn't have noticed it had eheath not pointed it out, assuming that's what he IS talking about haha.

I think it could also be the way you catch up with him at the top of the jump, and the tripod's static for a fraction of a second, but noticeable, and then you start it up again, and move it down and it's static again.

For some reason that kinda stuff's always bugged me, I prefer to see a tripod shot keep moving constantly if it's started, even if it's just a gradual slow down.

A broken neck is as debilitating as you might think haha. I was only out for 2-3 weeks when I broke mine. I was filming the same day I left the hospital(painkillers only made this easier).

As far as the biking edit. I thought it was really dope. Only shot I had a problem with was the one everyone has pointed out already.

@gavin

nice work for the most part, there was one thing though that I think limited this edit from being "extremely good" though. Some of your movements with pans/glides start too late and are not "fluid", which, IMO, is something to be avoided moving into a high end caliber of work.

By that, I mean that you a) did not keep the camera moving the whole time (usually your starts are static and then you jump into the movement) and b) cut them in post to show this lack of movement at the start. The three shots i'll focus on are back to back, the glide at 0:29, the pan at 0:33, and the zoom at 0:36

0:29 - In my opinion, this shot should have started about 15-30 frames earlier than it did, and contained more motion before you cross behind the rider on the trail. In the video, it starts with some shake as the rider is passing the cam, and it felt like you had been caught off guard (aka OH SHIT THERE HE IS TIME TO SHOOT). I like the concept of the shot, but again, would have been nice if you had tracked him from the previous hit about 5ft behind where you started the clip, and then ran across the track behind him and tracked him with a nice pan.

0:33 - This shot should have been a pan from the beginning, plain and simple. you have at least 1 second of static before you start, which I never like watching. If possible, keep the pan continuous, even if you do change the rate. Start slower and build into that faster whip as he passes by. I will stray off my point and say the ending of the clip is decent with the pan stops in this case, as the rider suddenly changes directions around the next turn.

0:36 - Again, keep it consistent. The beginning of the clip should have had a slight zoom and maybe contained some of that movement that came in the middle of the clip. It was a jerky, fast, rough transition between the first and second parts of the shot, which in a well made edit like this deducts points. The hard stop at the end of the zoom too made it pretty obvious that you hit the wide end of that zoom, which again is another harsh look. Fade in and out of every motion, zoom, pan, slide, but never stop hard. I will give you credit though, that is an incredibly hard shot to do well, and you did decent. Just picking this apart for reference of my point

other shots of note:

Your slides - you have the idea of constant motion down with those. You never cut the slides before they start, instead you always cut from the previous shot into a constant, smooth slide. Good job.

1:37 - Exposure on this shot is poop once he hits the woods, not a fan of it. Would have been better as two shots, one of him just outside of it exposed for that, one from inside the woods exposed for the woods.

1:49 - Nice glide work, a longer shot with pretty good motion throughout (bit shaky but if the broken neck was an issue at the time of filming I certainly can't knock you on that)

1:56 - Well done on this slight zoom tele track. Quicker shot but well done

Thanks all for checking out my video!

@evan I think I know what you mean for sure now, I'll keep it in mind next time I'm shooting/editing!

@magnus same as evan ^

@crotchkiller Thanks mate! And yeah, I pointed that out on the last page, that it's not really a huge inhibition to doing stuff. Glad you like my graphic!

AND @jamie (et all) about this main point about keeping constant motion. I really do appreciate people saying how I need to keep everything in motion if there's going to be motion. I never caught on to that or realized it was something I should do until you guys pointed it out! I don't really have anything to say in response to your points individually except that I appreciate them all and I'll definitely take them into consideration when filming my next video. Also, the neck think isn't a huge problem for glides, I'm just not that great at them yet.

Thanks everyone!

1d mark ii n came today. I love the image my gh2 puts out, but the build on this is so solid, I love it. GH2 compared to the 6D (my mom shoots with one) is like the 6D to this. I had a tough time getting the m42 adapter to work, turns out part of it needs to be filed to avoid the AF switch, now everything works great. Also, my mom ordered a 16-35 f2.8L II which also came today, so she's going to let me use that and her 70-200 f2.8L. So pumped, can't wait to go shoot some sequences with this machine gun of a camera

Pretty sweet cam. Friend of mine who shoots mountain bike races still uses one. It's built like a tank, but also weighs as much as one. Sensor is still rock solid IMO.

stolen from the camera store's page, here is the second video, it is actually titles Battle at F stop Ridge

Stoked I finished my roll of Delta 400 out camping and really stoked about the portra 160 I just put in.

Stoked on a timelapse I got this morning that I ramped from 3am with the stars/meteors until 9am in full daylight.

Fuck yeah dude! Really love that edit! Good choice for music, too. As song as the first chord was struck I knew where it was going and I was really looking forward to it. Keep it up. And 2k views in a day is pretty darn impressive if you ask me...

Borrowed my friends Nikon F5, the results of ten minutes playing with it:

This thing devours film at a rate which you can't comprehend.

Also ordered an Epson V600.

Just threw this GoPro mount together for my car! Little custom work and she was good to go hahaha. Way better than what I was using before!

It's $90 but I get 40% off (employee discount).

Thanks erikK, much appreciated! I just realized my other prints arrived too so I'm even more stoked they turned out well too.

Swapped my manfrotto 055xprob +701hdv for a sachtler ace, may not have needed it, but it's going to be pretty damn advantageous. Would have preferred the mid level spreader instead of the floor level, but I'm still pretty fucking stoked on that deal.

Nice man! How did you ramp? I've been wanting to try it for a while but without expensive gear it's really hard (I think?)

Field Production just dropped the trailer for Supervention. It is the most MOTHERFUCKING EPIC trailer ever. FP just whipped their dicks out and straight out pissed on every other trailer ever. DAMN!

Manually. Watched the histogram after taking a picture, once the highlights were overexposing, I would drop the exposure.

Went from ISO 800, shutter 30, f2.8 down all the ISOs, then dropped shutter, then closed the aperture.

My editing program LRTimelapse let me edit them cleanly with no flicker

Fuck yeah can't wait to get my sick shots scanned.

Wait wut?

Apparently I didn't have the film engage the sprockets properly in my Konica so I just handed in a roll of unexposed film......durp.

Luckily HEMA was cool and they gave me a free package of film because I looked so sad.

Meh, I'm spoilt for choice..

Do need a Leica do.

On a related note: Ijust acquired this Minolta X-700 (With a very high serial number so it's probably no more then 14 years old, still has the plastic on the base)

Came with a Vivitar 28-210mm, (with a small bit of fungus on the front element. :(

Stoked that I'm leaving for New Brunswick in two hours, hoping to get a lot of good shots! Also stoked that I managed to pack all my gear into a small bag that I can fit into my carry-on

NOT stoked about multiple families/small children surrounding me on a small dock/pier while trying to land a quadcopter tonight.. Somewhat content with the results though. Tossing a quick edit together and will post when it's done.

Jordan Loyd prints came today (won an earlier contest)

Also got a photo of mine published with a local band's interview piece in a Denver magazine, stoked!
