Louie Vito Olympics

couldn't agree more his first run was awesome and they hated on it, qualifiers too he stomped it and they gave him a score just a little bit higher then people who were falling... then shaun white goes on his second run just a little bit bigger but no doubt sicker than vito but get an almost perfect score...
another thing. they talk about the level of prestige that is the olympics but they can't even get an announcer that can call the shit right? i mean i am a skier and i was correcting him on my tv! "that's a 1080, two and a half rotations!" fuck that. makes me not even want to support skiing the games if it is going to be a shit show like that with judges that are either paid off or are skiers, and announcers that have never even been near a park.
I can just see it now. "inverted helicopter skier spin! into a double barrel roll into another inverted loop-de-doo with an iron cross grab!" tanner hall and simon with 49.9s on runs where they fall and justin dorey and peret olenick getting robbed just like louie.

before the hate starts i wasn't dissing tanner and simon, just illustrating the point that the judges just score the highest according to how big of a name the athletes are, disregarding the runs

agreed. Louie was robbed. Back to back dubs, one of which was switch, stomped clean and he gets 5th? Bull ShitShout out to S.W. though. He killed it.

as soon as i saw that run, i was like......wait, what 5th place??

he did 2 double corks, a 12 with the smoothest landing i have ever seen, then as soon as i saw Peetu's run and he was in silver with only one double cork and and i dont think he did a 12 either. i'm pissed, it should have been white, vito, lago. bullshit

Any one could see that VIto got fucked, it wasnt hard to tell. the only downside in his run was a bit of "wobble in his staight air" what the fuck is that. the man did two dubs one Switch and he got lower that the dude who only did one double.

Well glad it wasn't just me. I thought I was taking crazy pills when I saw a clean run like that get scored so low. I wonder if the judges weren't trying to prevent a podium sweep. I guess I just assumed I didn't know the ins and outs of the judging.

vito's run was NOT better than Peetu's...sorry

I agree his run deserves a much higher score than he got, probably around 42-43. Peetu's score was a bit high I was thinking more around 44. But his run was just BETTER than vito's overall. Vito didnt have nearly the amplitude that Peetu had or the cleanliness, his landings were near perfect. I do give Vito props for the 2 doubles (one was cab if i remember correctly too) but Peetu showed the ability to spin almost every way imaginable and threw a variety of grabs in, which is what the judges are looking for.

White did not deserve as high a score as he got on his last run, it was a 47.5-48 at best, sketchy last trick (although it is tech as hell, dub mctwist 12) with not much of a grab. Just saying he gets the benefit of the doubt, just like in any sport where the refs (judges in this case) are lenient with the superstars

Louie absolutely crushed it but this is true. He has to step up his amplitude a bit to find himself on the Olympic podium.

petu was sketch...dude couldn't hold a grab.

vito slayed, so damn clean and grabbed who cares if he ddn't go the extra 3-4 ft out? this isn't the high air contest.

Well I think Vito may have been able to capture bronze if he had decided not to throw the 12 and go for a huge clean 10 at the end. His grab was somewhat lacking and it was a poor choice to throw that trick down closest to the judges where they will NOT miss any little mistake. Better to throw the 12 in the middle of your run and throw something with a sweet grab held throughout at the bottom.

Take notes from dumont on where to throw the 12 (from a few years ago at least)

vito should have had silver, his first run was fucking epic. i know he didnt go as high as the other guys, but hes like three feet tall. he is physically incapable of matching the bigger guys momentum.

plus, if you watch his spins he actually gets the grab, and holds it through nearly the entire spin. (versus letting go after the first 180 like peetu or grabbing boot like shaun) he also throws shit clean as fuck.

who cares if he wobbles his straight air a little? its a fucking straight air. it shouldn't be there in the first place.

i thought lago should have placed second. that can be the problem with doing good on the first run, second runs get scored higher more often than not.

Dumont is tiny and holds the record for highest air out of a QP.

Agree that he nailed his grabs though. Peetu barely even bothered. Shaun White did pull off a double grab on that 1st double cork through the whole spin though. He deserved it.

Most style has to go to that Japanese dude in the green and yellow. Super tweaked grabs. Love how buton made the "anti-uniform" and Japan just said "fuck uniforms. Style for miles.

i haven't seen vito's run, but ipod through back to back dubs and he got fourth. it seems that the olympic judges put more emphasis on air than other judges. also any bobble or imperfect landing gets knocked huge. which is why whites victory lap shouldn't have scored as high as it did, but, whatever, he'd already won.

as someone already mentioned: Simon Dumont

I was more impressed with Peetu's grabs in his spins.

And you sort of answered your own question. He was wobbling on the straight air. Huge straight airs are actually tough to do, air to fakies included (similar as to how people laugh when you tell them a huge zerospin is hard). The judges want to see that you can do it all, hence why you get more points more a variety of grabs etc.

And Kabuko killed it, that mctwist was sick.

Anyone have links to the runs? I would love to rewatch, might change my opinion somewhat as I am spouting out shit off of my memory.

vito's' 2nd score was low, but he still was no where near the podium. maybe he shoulda got fourth instead of fifth. i thought scotty lago should've got second and peetu should've got third. lago's method is beautiful, maybe he should have won just for that.

response to a couple of points people mentioned:

the announcers are pat parnell and todd richards. they both know what they're talking about but they are really there to explain shit more than to provide analysis. like TR tweeted who wants to explain the difference between a melon and a method to your grandma.

and vito being short doesn't matter. they're all short. shaun white is short. the Japanese guys are both realllly short. in any case, the difference isn't height or weight but one's comfort level with the big tricks. the guys on the podium did the same tricks as vito just 5 to 10 feet bigger. if kabuko landed his dub cork he probably would've been in the top four

and dumont was fking bombing into that quarter pipe. i think a more fair comparison would be the high air contest in the x games.. did dumont win that? no.

U.S. should have swept pipe. Vitos run was very comparable to whites first run. His 1260 was landed perfect at the end of his run and correct me if I am wrong, but wasnt he the only one who threw a 12? Other than the mcwhatchamacallit. He should have got second.

I am really stoke about Scotty Lago taking bronze, He earned it. I really liked his shout outs to Danny Davis and KP.
