Losing quality when editing

So I am a total noob at editing, when making the edit it ends up losing a ton of quality, it looks great in preview but the end product looks nothing like it.

example

Gopro Test Edit from Ryan Johnson on Vimeo.

Now I shot in 960, and made it an .avi file mjpeg compression. Now Pinnacle would only let me have it in 720 resolution, but that video seems to be alot less than that.

Help me in my n00bness please!

Instead of .avi, try h.264. Likely the editing program has a default bitrate lower than that of your input files. The bitrate is the amount of information per second of video- the higher it is, the better quality the video will be, to an extent. There comes a point at which the bitrate is the same as that of the original input video - full quality. Any higher makes no difference, but continues to increase your file size.

It should all be there in the export options.

bitrate for HD video should be somewhere around 6500 - 8000 kbps. And yes, the final format should be h.264.

Also, Pinnacle only lets you edit in 720p because 1280x720 is 16:9, which is currently the industry standard aspect ratio. I'm assuming you're working on a more entry-level NLE, so it is no surprise that the available features are going to be those that are most coveted. This means your 960 footage simply gets cropped.
