I just purchased 2013 Line Sir Francis Bacons 178 cm (140-108-136 mm) and am looking at alpine touring skins for them. I've noticed that G3 has some decent looking ones for $175 but wouldn't mind other options, or used ones if they'd be any good. Help and/or direction would be greatly appreciated.

the K2 skins have been working well for me. i believe they also have an available adapter for skis that aren't z-clip compatible

Black Diamon Accension skins rock. look for the old ones without patterns on the base of the skin. they will last 10 years.

second this!

really though, I think the most important thing is choosing a set where the material feels durable and the clips are solid.

Black Diamond's (not sure which model) tail clip flip over system is absolute horse shit. they probably have better quality on higher priced models, but the set my buddy had were super flimsy and fell off all the time. can't less-highly recommend them.

Make sure you get some mesh to put on them so they don't stick to eachother, but if they don't come with a set just get some at the fabric store or something cause they're a total rip off from the manufacturer! they save so much stress and make them last longer, too-very important!

Would I be alright with the G3 alpinist smu? 100mm wide? or would that be too narrow? I'm guessing that I'd have to get skins as wide as the tip/tail and trim from there?

For Bacons, the tip of the ski is actually 140mm so you'd want to get skins that are roughly 5-10 mm narrower than that so the ski fits all the way up to the rocker point of the ski after trimming it, meaning you want to buy 130/135ish wide skins and then trim them down.

Read this guide for all the info you need on buying skins:

Also, I've had the best luck with BD Ascencion and G3 Alpinist skins, they have the best grip on steeper terrain. The brand named skins like K2/Atomic tend to suck actually.

If you can, get a skin that is the right length for your Bacons, if you cannot find one, getting a universal skin is also fine but you will have to trim it in the LENGTH and width.

Black Diamond Ascension STS are the grippiest, most durable skin out there. I fkn love mine and even after a few years of crap maintenance they're still going strong.
