Looking to buy my first camera

I've been thinking about this for a while, and I finally decided that I would like to buy a DSLR. I have very limited knowledge of how to operate one (I have used friends' before, but nothing major).

After a bit of research, I have narrowed it down to the Canon T2i and the Nikon D5000. I will be using this camera almost exclusively for photography. If anyone would like to give their opinions on the cameras that I'm thinking about or possibly recommend an alternative in the same price range, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Thank you very much. I think I'm going to look around and see what the best price I can find for a refurbished is. Also, do you think I would be better off getting the body only and then buying a better lens, or should I stick with the kit lens at first?

get a better lens right off the bat. if its for photography only, 40d's are nice ive heard. no video, but you get magnesium body weather sealing etc etc for the price of a refurb t2i body, approximately.

If you're focusing on photography, look into a used nikon D90/D80 or an used canon 30D/40D/50D.

Someone is selling a 30d with a batter grip, 50 1.8 and other accessories for 400 in the sell trade forum..

50d is a great camera, and they are making magic lantern for it which should give it good standard def video
