looking for new pow skis, i live in maine but will be skiing in BC and Alaska extensively this season:

-rockered!

-105 mm waist + (looking around 110 - 120 mostly)

-will be riding/landing switch, so something i can mount pretty close but a little bit back from center

-hopefully regular sidecut underfoot so i can ski groomers but this isnt as important, will consider reverse sidecut/camber etc

-want to use the ski for EC pow days in the tight trees, as well as heli lines in alaska (big range i know)

-i like riding a softer ski because i am light and especially for butters and ollies and shit

me:

-im 18, about 5'7, 130 or so pounds

Iv been looking at the Hellbents in 169, as well as the rossi s6 jibs in 174 so far.

Suggestions and helpful advice is much appreciated, im spending a fuck ton of my own money on this!

I live in quebec and i have175cm JJ's, decent on groomers and kill it in the trees. Use them 1 week in utah and they float well, i wish i bought the 185cm but i have too deal whit this. So JJ's, blog, bentchetler salomon shogun maybe ?

you are probably gonna want around a 175-181cm ski..

There was a problem with the S6, the camber came out wrong from the presses, don't know if its been fixed or not. I'd check that out and if you can't find its been fix, i'd avoid those. new Hellbents are 132 under foot and probably overkill on the east (from what i hear).

You say you want a soft ski, but that you want to ski heli lines in alaska. I've never been to alaska but it seems to me the kind of place you want a stiff ski for. People seem to like JJs for charging and you can land switch, so that has to be an option, as are Surface One Lifes and Bentchetlers.

i like the feel of a softer ski better, from experience i am small enough that a flexy ski doesn't inhibit stability and stompability for me. i rented icelantic nomad sft (the softer profile version) in telluride and was fine at speed as well as stomping 20+ plus airs. i dont need a stiff as a board ski for the way i turn in deep snow (slashh), and its not like im going to be straightlining 3000 foot lines. I dont want a ski to stiff that it will compromise my ability to play around with, as i said i am small and have more trouble olling, slashing, and buttering stiffer skis than it is worth for the increase in stability. softer skis feel livelier and generally more fun. do you know how the one lifes are? im nervous that they will be far to stiff but otherwise they are exactly what i am looking for

i hear that they are super stiff, but they have so much rocker that you can't fail to butter and ollie.

JJ's are soft in the tip and tail but mid-stiff underfoot, probably a good option. I'm not much (inch taller and 5-10 pounds) bigger than you and I have chetlers. Haven't ridden them yet.

Also if you're going to AK you will be straightlining at least a bit?

i mean yeah of course i was just trying to say that im not a pro or anything and am not going to need the stiffest ski so i can go 50 mph down 40 degree faces and stomp 60 foot airs. but from what iv read about the chetlers they seem really perfect for me, like a jibby pow ski, which is exactly what i am looking for. 183 may be a little on the long side though...once you ride them can you post up and let me know you're initial thoughts? im under no time pressure to buy the skis

thanks for the advice though man
