Looking for my first dirt bike, and wondering what to get

Hey guys, I'm looking for a first bike for me. I'm 15 years old, about

5' 8", and I weigh about 135 lbs. I have been riding my friends Kawasaki

klx140 for a while, and have ridden his '07 Kawasaki kx250f several

times. I want to get a bike of my own, preferably a 250 4 stroke. I was

just wondering what suggestions/advice you guys could give me in finding

a bike, as far as what bike would be the best, etc. Most of what I will

be doing with it is riding at gravel pits, and up canyons, mostly on

trails though. I definitely want a bike with a manual clutch too. Thank

you all for your help! It is much appreciated! I will be buying a used

bike for sure though, in case you were wondering. Again, thanks.

I haven't had very good experience with Yamaha dirt bikes. They seem to break all the time. Honda, on the other hand, makes very good bikes. So, I'd go with a CRF250R.

if its your first bike (even though you said nothing about being interested in one) don't get a 2-stroke. just adds extra complications for a whinier throttle, and if you fuck up the mix and dont put enough oil you end up with costly top end repairs.

Ya, I've got a mate who's had the cops called on him many times for the noise of his 2 stroke. Annoys the hell out of people, and I have no desire to replace top end gaskets etc, thanks deud k+

I have a 05 (i think) CRF250R and my dad has a '04(i think) CRF250X that we both ride on trails in the desert of Arizona. I'm about 6 ft tall and aroun 150 and the bike is perfect so you'll definitely grow into it properly. The only difference between our two bikes it the gearing and a few body modifications. My bike was created for motocross or track racing whereas my Dads bike was mad more specifically for offroad trail riding. His bike came geared for top speed while mine came for acceleration; his also came with a skid plate (super clutch for trail riding). I'd say go with whichever of these two you could find for riding, I like my CRF250R because in most cases we aren't ever riding enough for his higher top speed to out beat my quick acceleration. Both are fun and are manual transmission. Hope this helps you out in some way or another!

tl:dr - Get either a CRF250R or 250X, both great bikes and super fun.

2 strokes sound fucking amazing. it's an acquired taste.

but 4 strokes are more reliable and shit, got better high-end speed. You sound really small for a 250 personally, but I am a strong believer of being in complete control of your bike and being able to manuever really really simply. That said I'd go with a 150 or 200.

KTMs are really expensive but nice

Hondas are prime

Yamahas are pretty good

Kawasakis i don't know jack shit about

Huskys make good enduro bikes

good luck mane

iv been riding dirtbikes my whole life and re built them and everything. id say go with a 125 two stroke yamaha suzuki honda or kawi it doesnt matter aslong as its like 2000 or newer. honda is the only bike with aluminiumn a aluminum frame up till around 05 when other brands started doing it. do not buy a four stroke yamaha any older than about 06 cause they were junk. and dont buy a fourstroke honda or suzuki any older than 04. but remember, hondas require mkore often fluid change and have tranny oil and engine oil one on each side and must be changed about every 5-8 hours. two strokes are actually pretty relable. when the top end blows its only about 100-200 bucks to re build but if a fourstroke blows upyour looking at possibly over 1000. (i just blew my crf 450 up two weeks ago). so if you dont want to spend tons of money and want to beable to fix your bike on your own get a 2 stroke 125. much simpler than a 4 stroke. but if thats not a issue for you id get a crf 250. there great bikes. and if you have any questions just ask and i prolly can give you a answer.

not really. you need a specialty tool to take just about anything off them. parts for theme are way over priced. and there really no better that other brands

im sorry to all i offend by this but a lot of you guys dont know your shit. if you are looking for a bike to ride around and basically trail ride get a ktm 200xc. yes its a 2 stroke but its all bottom end. and to ALL THE MAINTENANCE.... i race almost every other weekend doing enduros and harescrambles and redo my top end what one time a year? my bikes stay immaculate. no need for a 4stroke. the sound carries much further than a 2 stroke. KTM is a super reliable brand. their bikes 08 and newer are perfect. give us a price range and i can help you with other brands and help you get the best choice. and yeah im a little biased xD oh and mixing gas is the easiest fucking thing in the world.....

well I suppose all my friends are too small for their bikes then....... most of em' are about my size and have 250's. I dun know deud, I'm completely comfortable ridin on a 250, so it should be fine... Ya, a couple of my friends have ktm 125 2 strokes, and they really like em', but all of my rec vehicles have been 4 strokes to date... and I just kinda like the sound of a 4 better, thanks though deud.

Its true! Ktm's are reliable shit! The only thing stopping me from getting a KTM though is the price of the parts, they are excellent bikes, but better suited for my friends with deeper pockets than me....
