Looking for a DSLR camera

I'm Looking for a DSLR camera not too expensive that comes with a kit. Budget is about 600$ for the kit.

I was recommended a pentax K100D I am not to familar with it and I am not leaning towards that camera just yet because it is not SDHC compatible and does not shoot it Jpeg.

I want :

Jpeg format

SDHC compatible

Burst mode

any suggestions?

Sony's not really known for their DSLRs. They make some great point and shoots, but for a DSLR you should stick with Nikon or Canon. They aren't all that different, some people just prefer one or the other.
I use a Canon 40D (very different from a Nikon d40) which is probably a bit out of your price range, (Mine was 1400 with 2 lenses, 2 Extreme III 8gb cards, filters, and a Card reader) but I've used the Canon rebel XT before and it's pretty awesome for the price. (as are the XTi and XSi) A lot of people will tell you that they are 'soccer mom SLRs' which is true to some extent, but that doesn't mean they don't take good pics.
On the Nikon side, for 600, the D70 or D80 would be great cameras to check out. I'd recommend staying away from the D40 and D60 just because autofocus doesn't work with certain lenses. Hope that helps out some. Other people will of course have different opinions, so you should read up on some of these cameras and decide what's best for you.

I bought a Nikon D90 a while back and really liked it, It came with two lenses and even had HD movie mode. After shooting with it for about a week I realized it was a bit too much for me. So I ended up selling it for a bit under retail and bought a Fujifilm s100fs. I love this Camera, its so great. If you don't have much experience with DSLR's yet you should definitely give this one some thought. Its right at you budget on the B&H website and you'll love it. It shoots at 7 frames per second (perfect for sequences) has a 2/3 sensor, a wide angle lens that is fixed ont the camera. So you dont have to worry about buying more lenses and this lens has a manual zoom ring, a manual focus ring and is the equivelant of a 28-400mm lens.

So If you have experience than I just typed for 3 mins. for nothing :p

but if you dont have experience with a DSLR I would strongly reccomend this camera.

Here it is on B&H

Here is a review on DPreviews

Well, how many fps, how much you looking to spend, preferred brand, do you need a certain amount of MP's to make prints, stuff like that?

You want SD cards or CF cards? (i got the high capacity part)

That will narrow it down.

Have you looked at Sony lately? They own all the rights to Minolta...so in essence, they have been making autofocus cameras since 1984. The A mount they use is compatible with every single autofocus lense from Minolta ever made. They use many of the same internals as Nikon and while they dont go as high on the professional level as Canon and Nikon, their high end DSLR's are more than adequate for the hobbyist.

You stating that Sony isn't known for their DSLR's is a pretty big strike against your "unbiased" knowledge of the DSLR market. I am a huge fan of Canon and Nikon, but for this person, who isn't buying a pro level camera, there is no need not to look at Sony as well. Dollar for dollar, there may actually be something better in their line up.

I understand that they make DSLR's. They just aren't really all that popular, which I think is something important to consider. I bought a 40D because the newspaper I shoot for has all canon lenses, and most of my friends with DSLR's have canon's as well and I sometimes borrow their lenses. I'm not trying to hate on sony, it's just a fact that nobody uses their DSLR's.

I'm not very experienced with SLR's, My busget is 600$

Brands: Nikon, Pentax or Canon

I already have a 16gb SD card

I don't of a preference for MP's probably 6 or soo.

hopes this helps

I narrowed down My search to:

Nikon D40

Fujifilm s100fs

Pentax K100D

Canon Rebel XS

Suggestions are welcomed

I am not looking at sony or olympus because they are not SD compatible.

Go on keh.com and get a used digi body,if canon get like a 20d or 30d, it's much better than the rebels.

If you want nikon just get a d70.

Pentax i guess that ones fine.

Or take chronic lines advice and get like an Hasselblad H3D, i hear they have really good image quality and like 50 megapixels.

Nikon d40 - If you're going nikon, go for the d70, It's compatible with much more lenses.
Fujifilm s100fs - skip it. it has the bulk of an SLR but much less of the features.
Pentax K100D - Probably a fine choice, I know absolutely nothing about pentax.
Canon Rebel XS - From what i hear, the XS is the worst model of all of the rebels. They cram a lot more megapixels on the same size sensor, so it's a much noisier image. Check out the XTi or the XSi. You can pick up a used XTi for super cheap.
Someone else mentioned the Canon 20D and 30D. These would probably be the best choice out of all the above listed, or on par with the Nikon D70.

my first shooting with my Fujifilm s100fs. havent had time to play around with to many settings but so far video looks great, really clear and audio is beyond my expectations. heres a couple pics just to kind of show you what it looks like. the settings on my cam were pretty much at default and they havent been touched by photoshop I was taking pics of a rail jam so dont expect anything great. but ya overall super easy cam to work with and im sure I couldve gotten better pics if I had played around wtih my settings a bit, but I had got the cam the night before lol. click for higher resolution.

Ummm, he said that he wants to use his SD card's, the D70 uses CF cards. If you are lookin at nikon for around 600 the D60, D40, and D40x will do just fine. They will also take SDHC's.

The Hasselblad H3D is a $30,000 camera and yeah shoots 50 meg because its a medium format. The kind of cams you use for billboards and shit. Usually only see them in studios...very high end studios.

I suggest you go for the Canon 30d.
Go to photographyonthenet forums and eventually you will find someone selling a 30d for 400 - 450. I got a used 30D with only 8,000 clicks and a new 18-55 IS lens for $456! The type of Camera you are getting for that price is an insanely good deal. For 300 more dollars you could have a 18-55 ($100) with IS and 55-250 ($199) with IS.
The 30d is a much better camera than the Rebel XS, XSI, XTI or XT, and Nikon D40. If you want to shoot skiing you can shoot at 5 FPS where the XS only shoots 3 FPS and the D40 only shoots 2.5 FPS. The buffer will fill up with only 5 frames, where the 30D buffer allows get off 11 RAW Files at 5 FPS. The XS has no spot metering, the 30D does, the 30D has a 9 point auto-focus system.

yeah, definitely get a nikon or a cannon. The D-80 is pretty cheep now, around $800 (body only, $840 with a lense) last time i checked on amazon. Its a little bit higher then u wanted to spend, but I and everyone i know loves it. if its out of your price range, im gonna go along with everyone else, and say get a D40, D40x, or D60. or the cannon equivalent.

Thanks I'm still on the fence with this decision. It's alot of money and I'm new to photography. I still have a canon powershot SD790 IS with about 1 000 clicks.

I'm looking at a digital SLR for all around better photography. Not necessarily for skiing because odds of breaking it are higher. but for scenery, macro and architectural.

I have an old Olympus OM-1 but needs lots of repair. I might also receive an Canon A1 with 3 extra lenses. The downfall to this is they are film cameras and at first I will probably have too go through a dozen films to get a decent picture. The good part, the cameras are free.

I dont know much about film cameras, but most of the people i know who have switched have loved it, and even though it is VERY nice to get a free camera, you have to buy new rolls of film, instead of a few memory card. its your call though; i've shot with both and film is great.
My first (and only personally owned) camera was the D60, but i got it for all around shooting as well; i just thought it would be fun to take it out on the snow. however, unless you are making 20x30 prints of your photos, the D40 is fine and MUCH cheeper. I believe the cannon equivalents are the XS (D40) and the XSi (D60). if you go to sites like B&H or adorama, you can find pretty cheep kits, which come with a lense and a body. one of nicest things about the D40-60/XS(i) is that they are extremely light. I use my local mountains "official camera" when i shoot for them; and it weighs a ton.
anyway you go; an slr will produce MUCH better pics then your point and shoot. if you can get 3 free cannon lenses, id find out if they would work with the XS/XSi, and then get the Dslr body (which is way under your limit) and the lenses. hope this helps.

Thanks for the help I was told the canon rebel XS and XSI were shit. someone recommended the canon 40D or something like that.

for the classic SLR i totally agree but I was thinking of it as a start before breaking the bank and buying a new DSLR.

I still need to negociate the lenses. but it would help ALOT! If it was garanteed that i get the lenses i'll go for canon. but otherwise Nikon's the way to go

I'm not tryin to talk trash on Canon just cause I'm a nikon shooter but I've shot most of the Canon DSLR's and to me the Xs and the Xsi feel like toys. The Nikon D40/40x, D60 and so on, also the Canon 30D and 40D feel more solid.

If you have pictures you have taken with a DSLR please post them.

it seems you need to have your pictures on NS to upload them in a thread. If there is another way you can upload pictures from your PC/Mac directly without having them to be uploaded to the NS site let me know.
