I weigh 140 lbs and I am 5’7”. I am pre-ordering vishnus in April and will either get pivot 14s or 18s. Since I am soon off to college I want something bombproof, so I have been looking at the pivot 18s over the 14s. Will a shop mount pivot 18s For 140lbs because there isn’t a recommended din that low on 18s because the minimum is 8. Or should I just get the 14s?

Get the 14's. The binding will be the most effective at preventing injury if your target DIN is in the middle of the range, not either extreme. Also, just because the max DIN is higher does not make the binding more durable or "bomb proof". It sounds like you're not gonna grow too much more too, so you could even look at a 12 if that's the case as a type 3+ skier with your height and weight has a target din of 8, right in the middle of that range.

The pivot 18 is more durable, its got a lot more metal in it but I wouldn't get the 18's unless you are trying to set your dins above 10. Also they are heavier so I would only get them if you have had durability issues with bindings before.

Both bindings are great, but unless your rocking your dins at 9 or higher you should probably go with the 14. the 18's are definitely a bit more durable, but even the toes on them wear out eventually.

I know you're dead set on pivots,

But I'd go sth2 13/16 if you want a bomber binding that'll last you thru school. Only reason being solly brakes are nearly free and easy to swap when you break them ejecting switch. Pivots, not so much.

Also, at 140 there's no reason to have an 18 din clamp. Don't wanna fugg your knees if you can't go lower than 8

Dude im the same height and weight as you and my pivot 14s are on their 4th pair of skis rn trust me they will hold up for you

I second this. With the sth2 you’re getting a better bomber toe piece than the 14 by far. They’re in your din range, and are bomber.

I'm thinking about setting the pivot 18's at 10 maybe 11 if I get them. I mainly want them because I found them on sale for 20% off and I don't trust plastic due to my old bindings. is it really that much of a safety hazard if I got 18's?

Where should your DIN be set?

people seem to really disagree on this. some will tell you that a DIN in the middle of a given binding's range is the best, others will tell you that it really shouldn't matter, and a DIN setting within range is a DIN setting within range

i can't tell you which is correct, or if it varies

pivot 18 for your size and weight seems like overkill but i do understand the desire for a durable binding with more metal.

they really need to bring back the 15 that comes with the better toe piece like the 18s (or more realistically, just sell the 14s with that toe piece)

I didn't realize you already stated your height and weight.

My opinion is that the bindings will be fine running in the lower end of the din range but it's a big step for you. You should be at 7-8?

Is there any chance you're going to be much larger anytime soon?

Have you ever blown up a binding?

Yeah I'm recommended for an 8 but I go higher then that. my Spx 12's blew up and i'm pre-ordering Vishnu Wets in April so I would be buying 18's now for next season.

pivots should perform a little better than SPXs, as well, so i'd keep that in mind
