Look backwards when riding switch?

While they get the terrain park together, I've been playing with long switch rides. Do you manage to keep looking downhill the whole time when going switch? I can only manage to get peeks when I'm making turns, and am not sure whether it's my stance, that my neck isn't flexible enough or if that's just how it goes.

 
um? dont you have too look downhill, are you going to look uphill and just crash to peices. so yes sir, look downhill all the time. you gotta train your neck to do so. you will be able to look over one side a lot better than the other!

I think the easiest way to do it is to turn you shoulders and lean forward a bit instead of just turning your head. It's kinda weird to get used to but if you do it enough it'll get easier

 
I turn my head one way or the other depending on the direction I'm carving. It's WAY easier without goggles. And you better look downhill all the time, I stopped for 5 seconds once and wasted some 40 year old guy. He was ok though.

the goggles are definately a problem and depending on how big your jacket is that will also get in the way

i try to look from side to side and that usually works cuz then u can see the whole hill

i look over my right shoulder and only my right shoulder, but i spin to the left, so approaching jumps etc screws me up

 
When I'm carving switch, I just change shoulders depending on which way I'm turning. That way you see what's coming directly toward you. Also, Scisor your feet so that one foot is farther down than the other. That helps your body body and head turn farther around.

Skimack -- scissoring the feet sounds like the thing I'm missing. I hadn't figured out how to turn my shoulders to look further downhill while keeping my lower body squared but that sounds like it will help.

I'll hopefully get out tonight and try it! Thanks to everyone for your tips!

 
it helps you carve to.....the lead change (scissor thing)its just like carving a turn facing forward ...you should lead change your skis then too.

at first i looked over my left shoulder but spun to the right. This was a problem when I tried swich tricks. Now I can look over both just fine. I can't look while I carve though. I concentrate too hard.

a lot of guys look over one shoulder and spin towards the other- you're blind when you go off the lip but the motion of the head across your body helps set your rotation.

anyway, i've found that these help for riding switch-

*scissoring your feet a little

*on whichever side youre looking, drop that hand a little lower than the other

*pivot with your shoulders as much as youur neck

*what really helps is to crouch down and sort of bend your head so you are looking horizontally... it sounds funny but works a lot easier than standing up staight. watch how the pros are crouched down riding fakie.

i find puttin the hand of the side that your lookin over near your butt, it just helps your body twist around better i think.

wow... you guys do some weird things... i ride with one foot infront of the other, and my body turned to the side... then i lean a bit forward, and when i turn i lean right into it like a snowboarder... so when im carving, my ass is like touching the ground when i turn one way, and my hands are close when i turn the other way. yep. just practise a lot and it will come.

deffinantly staggar the feet, one in front of the other. i havent done a regunar run for 3 days at my hill, i dont see how riding switch can be that hard.....

To get comfortable going switch, I went to the steepest slope at my hill and just rode straight down it switch, no stopping or anything. Speed helps break your fears

work on looking over the shoulder you'll spin over cuz if u wanna leave hits switch u'll have a tough time spinning over the opposite shoulder.

In response to this title, YES!!! you do look backwards when riding switch. How else would you see, unless you got some sort of dope as rear view mirror system set up. And in terms of carving, just practice a lot like switch fakie skiing, and the carving will come, like someone has said earlier, its just edge control and balance as if you were skiing normally. But no ones necks should be sooo stiff that they can't look behind them while they are skiing.

-If people don't want 'Posers' in their sport they should quit skiing and take up knitting. I highly doubt that anyone 'Poses' as a knitter. -Jibtech

i had this problem too because i was leaning forward and trying to look around myself. its much easier to just stand up straight and look over one shoulder. you may want to switch sides when carving but for tricks look over one shoulder (preferably in the direction you will spin) and use a backwards snowplow for speed checks
