i don't know if you guys have this problem on the east coast, but it sucks here. since i ski in the winter and don't surf 24/7 i am shunned. we get harrassed so much, it sucks. i here it is one of the worst spots for this but does anyone else ever get shit for this? oh and we surf santa cruz ca.
 
yeah locals are bitches sometimes but on the east coast its not as bad as the west, if your good though i dont think they care
 
Ohhh, its quite bad on the east as well! I know several spots that if you show up on a decent day and dont show any respect, you will not get ANY waves!!

I've even seen many people's windshields get waxed, tires slashed, etc. etc. etc...

I guess its hard to understand why they're such assholes unless you actually experience what they do: go out in 5 degree (air) 32 (water), LIVE there, surf there all the time, etc etc. Next thing you know its summer time and 100+ tourists show up and act like they own the place: snake, drop ins, ditch boards, paddle into lineups, speed through backroads, litter, etc etc and the list goes on..

I still dont think its an excuse to act like an ass, but i guess some people get fed up with it.
 
its always a battle for waves during the summer on the east coast. the locals think they own the place "which there entitled to" and the kooks think that there good surfers cause they took surfing lessons at the local surf shop and they are now good enough to surf the best breaks.
 
personally i have never experienced localism that much, but i have heard some pretty crazy stories.

For example, i once watched this documentary on the early days of dog-town skaters and how they were influenced by surfing, and how hardcore they were at certain spots and how localism was so extreme. One guy who lived and surfed there gave an account about how one day a guy paddled out who was not a local. After like 15 minutes, a local paddles out with the guys carborator on his board, picks it up, says "is this yours?" and drops it in the water.
