Living in Africa

Hey NS.
I'm going to Nairobi, Kenya with my family and one other NS'er tomorrow, and living there until late June. So, among all the things I'm gonna miss, skiing is high on the list. I think this trip is gonna be really cool, but I'm gonna be dealing with a lot of homesickness and not being able to ski. So what's a good way to cope with not being able to ski? I'm sure I'll be wanting to visit NS a lot, and the thought of almost a whole year before I can ski again will be quite painful. Any suggestions? I can skateboard there, I'm hoping that will relieve some of the pain. Thanks!

Honestly dude you are going to have a fucking amazing time and probably won't miss it as much as you think. Africa is a phenomenal place.

watch out for aids...jk

im sure ull have a sick time and will find some ill stuff to do u could try surfing, longboarding/skateboarding if there is roads there but itll prob be an ill trip and u will find some sick shit todo

photography. never been there but i can just assume that you would be able to take some amazing photos there.

my mom is a professor, so she's chosen kenya for a sabbatical, and she'll continue to do her studies there and i think it'll be sick too, thanks.

Dude your going to Africa and you are worrying that you won't get to ski for a year !?!?!?!?!

that is a once in a lifetime experience and im sure it will be so fun and amazing you wont miss home one bit.

You ski any winter, you can't go to Africa any time.

and take photos, im sure u cant get some amazing stuff, and depending on where you stay try to immerse yourself in their culture and learn how they live, it will be a life changing experience.

word dude i went to rwanda last year and the year before, africas different for sure but youll love it, you wont miss skiing or home as much as you think either have a blast

Dude, last year I did the same thing somewhat. I was in Africa from January to April traveling with my family. But I could not have said any better than what a lot of people have already said. You will really enjoy it, and Newschoolers usually cures the pain for skiing. I was lucky cuz last year there were the Hunting Yeti webisodes coming out. But really immerse yourself in the environment and culture, it is well worth it. Oh yeah, and take a ton of picutures, I came out of the trip with 3,500 pics.

"i bless the rains down in africaaa

gonna take some time to do the things we never haaaave"

just do what toto would do. do somethings you never have.

i spent 2 weeks in africa this summer on a mission trip, and can't fucking wait to go back. honestly, skiing isn't even going to be on your mind while youre there. there's so much to do and see, and all of the people love us white folks (at least in my experience). treasure the trip for all it's worth, it's going to be the best and most memorable year you've ever had. I wish you the best, and damn am I jealous

you're so lucky! i would love to take a trip like that. you'll have an awesome time for sure. enjoy yourself!

you guys are all so right, thanks so much. i'm sorry for being a pansy and worrying about skiing, you all helped me get over that

Pack your skis and a tow rope and go sand skiing behind the car (assuming there's sand in Kenya, I know nothing of the climate there)! Or head over to morocco, they skied there in a Warren Miller (yes, I realize this is across the continent).

photography for sure.

you're going to have a great time. africa is definitely on my list of places to go.

one my friends who is a sick skiier is spending the entire school year this year in Ghana...he's bummed about missing skiing, but you're not going to miss the whole season like him, and you'll probably make friends, unlike him.

have a great time, man

ahhh that's where i went. if you don't mind, could you find out what cities hes gonna be in/near? im curious as to if he'll be near i was. he's in for a treat, ghana was the shit.

Two winters ago I missed basically the whole season because I went to India from October-March. Once your out there man you won't miss skiing.....much. Shits so amazing you won't really have time to. Oh and the first two weeks you'll probably have major culture shock so that'll take your mind off it haha. I read probably 15 books, but there wasn't a TV or computer and it was like an hour walk to the nearest concrete to skate on. Also I didn't have a skateboard.

Oh by the way everyone is going to look at you funny. Especially if you are really big or a ginger or something to make you stand out. But you'll get over it and probably have the most amazing experience of your life.

I don't know if someone already said this but when I was in Oregon i went sand boarding(didn't have sand skiing) and had alot of fun, if where you are satying there are just even like 20 foot duned you can have fun throwing ones or threes off the windlips. and use alot of wax, before every third or so run put more on and rub it in the sand to work it in.

have fun
