Line with chick skis? Lets not make another bad decision.

Jordan basically answered the question...and my opinion is

Girls skis? WHY NOT? let girls have their own gear, and if they want to ride it, great...if they want to stick with guys gear, great as well. Its not like Line is going to put out a noodle of a ski for girls because they think 'girls need less of a ski'

anything NEW for the industry, as long as its an honest attempt, is a good thing. So what if you have a problem selling them VTRIDER (i dont mean that in a bad way, i worked ski retail for 2 years, and i know how hard it is to sell a pair of skis if their not 'cool) if they stay on the shelf all year, that does suck

Jordan, very well put, and I appreciate you coming on here and posting, it takes sack to do that.

The one thing thats going to hold you guys back from incredible sales numbers is the fact that there are curved up tails on your skis. Twins scare uneducated people. If a uneducated snowboarder walks into a shop, he/she will not even shrug at the fact that a snowboard has a turned up tail for 'switch' maneuvers. Fact of the matter is that a twin on a snowboard is pretty much standard equipment. YET, on skis, its not. Yes, women specific snowboards sell well, thats because a women specific snowboard is exactly like the K2 T9 or a Rossi B1W. Standard equipment. Twins scare people.

I can tell you that women’s skis sell extremely well, it’s the new thing. K2, in my eyes, does the best job with it. The “LOVE series next year is going to sell so well, its not even going to be funny. Chicks come in the shop all the time, see the graphics of the skis, and buy them on the spot. I have already presold about 3 or 4 Burnin Loves just on graphics alone.

Listen, I applaud you guys for making a female specific ski, everyone’s doing it. Just your not going to get any “new skiers on it. TWINS SCARE UNEDUCATED PEOPLE. The common female who walks into a shop is just going to steer towards a Burnin Love, I know that its going to be lighter then your ski, and theres no twin.

Although I rant and rave, I really mean no harm, just my personal opinion. And as a product manager, I know that opinions count, positive or negative ones.

^ you make a point, but i would disagree that a twintip on a ski is going to scare a woman away. I sold plenty of twins to girls just looking for a 'good ski'. I told them their fun, ride identical to a non-twin, and said 'go take them for a demo, if you like them, ill knock the price of the demo off the purchase'. With a kickass girl-centric graphic, the oppertunity to demo them, and the fact that its FOR THEM, i think the ski will move better then you think. And any shop that places a giant order of the skis will get hung with extra pairs im sure, hell we had extra ARMADAS at Freds the first year they came out. Just order up like 5 pair of each, and if they move, call Line and get some more

Last year I worked at the biggest shop in Boulder, and while our women's skis, like the T-9, sold well, twin-tips were also some of our best sellers. We had maybe 2 pairs of twins left at the end of the season, while we still had thousands of carving skis. Maybe Boulder is a more educated market on the happenings of the ski industry. But the owners of that shop still won't acknowledge the market potential for twin-tips. That's why I've got my own shop in Boulder now that only sells twins. While it is a risky market, it's the only one in skiing that is showing any growth. And as more people get into this aspect of the sport, the number of women will also grow. Even if they aren't aggressive in the park, they still would rather ski on something that puts them on the same level as the guys skis, rather than using an unagressive T-9. In a few years, nearly every ski sold will have somewhat of a twin-tip anyway. I applaud Line and the direction they're taking the sport, and I can't wait to get these new models on my wall.

I ski backwards.

^ Exactly

i worked at Freds Freeride fulltime last season, only one of three employees (the other two were the Owner Haskell and his wife Vicky)

its definately sick to see the sport i love have a shop dedicated to it, but i also hate the frusturation that comes along with a twin tip only skis shop. The 50 year old yuppies pull in with the BMW/RANGE ROVER/WHATEVER COSTS A SHITLOAD and look around for 10 minutes, and tell me 'how bad' these 'new double tipped skis' are. They just sit there and basically mock me, while I have to keep smiling and not get pissed off. While the twin tip market is the fastest growing field in skiing, the rest of the skiers that dont embrase twin tips will continue to go the the place up the road that sells the 1000 dollar Bogner suits and 1080s for 700 STORE PRICE

good luck with the shop, im sure it will turn out sick. Even though i dont work in retail anymore cause i made movies my fulltime gig, it was some of the most fun time ive spent getting kids on twins and sending them out

wow d-spin, you sure have it all figured out. I guess wanting a lighter ski and being a male is stupid because we all know that men are heavyer. If the girls ski is just as durable, but lighter why isn't it also released as a regular ski, not a bitch ski? Basicly I want the lightest ski possible with the strength needed for it to not fall apart.

'It was probably the most improved park in north america last year. That's mostly due to us getting up at fucking 8 am everyday and raking like monkeys, untill we were to baked to talk. Every now and then some texan would eat shit and it would be funny and we would call ski patrol on our radios. we would steal food from the base and cook it on our grill, then heckle people on the lift with our mega phone while we played frisbee across the run. and took naps behind the shack in the most exclusive hut on the mountain. o christ, best winter ever.'

Congrats Vtrider, well written posts that actually have a point, an NS rarity. But I'm going to have to side with the Levinthals on this one. While common sense may dictate that there will be a very small market for a female jib-specific ski, take this into consideration: Has this been done before? This is a market that has not been tapped yet, and while it may seem small, has unlimited potential. This is a perfect example of how Line is trying to lay the groundwork for a new wave of female jibbers, who may not be old enough to realize it now, but they'll reap the benefits later. I think the project will be a success beyond what Line could have ever hoped for. But that's just my gut feeling.

The person who started this thread is indeed bigot. I mean who are you to question Line's marketing strageties. They know what they're doing and have lot more experiences than that person will be ever able to accomplish. Back in 1995 everybody said Line's going gonna go under.. haha

Questioning is good. It gives you a better understanding of the rhyme and reason to what Line is doing. Bigot? No. He's made a lot more intelligent comments than you in this thread.

This is my short little reply:

1. Phrosty. You're an asshole. Shut up.

2. vtrider, it may or may not be a 'good' business decision based on numbers- for example, that this product is targeted towards a very small percentage of skiers. Well, from that perspective, Line's entire existence is a 'bad' business decision, because Line makes skis that are targeted towards only 2% of the entire ski market. If companies were going to run off of those percentages, then no one would make twin tips at all, because it's such a tiny market.

Point? Line is doing something that needs to be done, in the face of stats like this. That effort needs to be appreciated, because it's progressive and it's only the beginning. If you don't push the market, then the market won't develop.

Q: How many NS.com members does it take to answer a simple question?

A: 10. One to answer, three to say 'How fucking stupid are you?', three to say 'This has already been asked a thousand times', and three to say 'Who the fuck cares anyway?'

How about starting with graphics? I mean I know girls dont want to ski around with graphics of woman in bikini, or skulls on them.

i completely respect Line for putting their neck out again to support a new girls movement, just like they did with the original newschool movement. Michelle rips, ive never seen ashley ski, but obviously she is just as good. They should really rep the new skis well

well, i have scratches if that means anything, and what the hells wrong with skulls? in my experiences the chicks that have 'girlier' graphics suck alot more than the ones that just ride the ski because it's a ski...

some girls can ride guys skis, and do it really well, but it gets to be a problem for younger or smaller girls who juss dun have the weight to b able to flex a ski made for guys. Mebe they're goin for the whole supply side economics. Mite work. I'd buy em.

thread guy is way way off base.

werd up to line for taking shit forward. you idiots aren't looking at the bigger picture

i dont think line should waste their time and money makin a girls ski! there is not enough interst from girls to freestyle ski so there isn't a big enough market for them! Wuts the point of makin them anyway if girls wont to freestyle ski they should buy regular skis that the guys use! besides wut are they gonna change about the ski the weight? they'll paint them pink or yellow put a different name on them and call them chicks skies! I think its a stupid idea and line has gone to far to attrack customers!

im gonna let you guys in on a little secret... newschool skiing is never going to beas big as snowboarding. most mainstream people when you say you ski will think you do alpine racing and always will, newschool will continue to very large ways but it will never be as be as big as snowboarding so all you little kids bitching about it get a life. skiings sick we dont need the main stream to validate that and people on here who have been skiing longer than 10 years will aperciate this alot more becasue they did it before it was this surposed kool thing to do,

^True.

Line_man, I think if women have the opportunity and exposure to the product they'll step up and the project will be a success.

Liberty says that they have a girl-specific twin, but it's not a jib ski, it's a big mountain fat-twin. I haven't seen it, but it was rider (female) designed both in graphcis and in geometry.
