Lightweight Binding Suggestions

I just bought a pair of 185 2010 JJs. One thing I've always loved about this ski is how light it is. So keeping with that tradition, I wanted to buy a lightweight binding that will hold up well too.

I'm like 5'11, 155lbs.

I'm currently considering:

Salomon z12 Ti (Lightest)

Marker Griffon (Mid-Light)

Salomon STH14 (Least Light)

I have never owned a pair of bindings other than Looks until this point, so I have no experience with any of these. Can anyone vouch for their performance/durability/weight or lack thereof?

Thanks.

I do not have experience with the z12's, but I have heard from a few ski shops / friends that they do have some problems as far as durability/pre-releases are concerned.

The STH 14 is a sick binding (The ones with the Driver toe piece especially). The additional weight is worth the gain in strength you get from the bindings. I haven't heard of any real / consistent problems, and I haven't had any myself.

I'm unsure of the Griff, since I have only had the chance to ski on Jesters a handful of times, but I imagine they would be similar in feel due to the same design, just slightly less burly.

I know where you're coming from when you want to keep the whole set up light, but honestly when the skis are on your feet you will not notice a difference.

take sth 12's over the z12, and I think the griffon is lighter than both any way if I am not mistaken. Next year the sth 12 and 14 have the same body/construction. I am about the same size as you and I ride sth 12's and got a pair of griffons for my Lizzies so I think either of those would do you good.

Light bindings that are made well are 5lbs/pair give or take. Tyrolia Peak 15s/09 Head Mojo 15s/4FRNT deadbolt 15s are 5.1lbs and durable, STH 16s are made much better than 12s and 14s and are 5.2lbs. There is a reason the bindings you named are so light. Just take the extra half pound for a much better binding. The older Solly 914s are about 5lbs/pair.

the z12 TIs break all the time, even with skiers who do not ski hard. If they do not break they just pre-release. Griffons have been talked about alot in the past few days, so search. STH 12s and 14s are also made somewhat similar to z12s, so just get STH 16s or S912/S914s if you want a solly.

I have STH14 and mine releases all the time. I have mine on 12 and they still releases in the kicker or if I land switch with a bit of forwardlean. My tyrolia LD12 never did that even with 8 on dinscale.
The skibreak on STH are crappy. Land switch and loose the ski and you need to buy a new one.

Hm, well I have mine up to 9 and I've never pre-released or had any releases happen that I didn't want to happen.

Maybe you have a defective pair / forward pressure is fucked?

dynafit ft 12

lockable (wont come off)

reliable din

easy touring

hard charging

shy of 2 pounds for the pair.

Haha I will just throw some on 202 Lotus 138s or 198 XW Labs for my park skis then.

And yes, STH 12 and 14 will pre release all the time along with the whole Z series Solly bindings. S914/914/916/STH 16 are all good though and will work well for park and everywhere. They are all decently light for what they are though. (except 916, like 6.5lbs haha). And Tyrolias are great. Just about any high end Tyrolia(Peak/Mojo, FF, railflex) is a good binding. I can't comment on the superlight Tyrolias though, but think about it, there is a reason good bindings don't tend to be much under 5lbs.
