Light meter question

hey iv got a question for harvey and the other experienced photographers on this site, i dont mean to get off topic, but i shoot photos for a bunch of skiboard companies, so i know what im doing. But i just had a camera donated to me, and the light meter had me a little confused, on the left side it had shutter speeds starting at like 2 and at the top was 1000, you cant change the shutter speed manually, but it does coincide with the fstop changes you make, for example, if you change your fstop depending on the light situation the red light inside will go up or down on the scale. My problem is, i dont know where to keep the red light at! some people have told me between 125/250 is a good bet, but im not sure. Anyone with a camera with this light meter? any advice would be helpful,

The lower the shutter speed, the slower the shutter opens and closes. For e.g. If your shoot at, say 125, it's going to open and close a lot slower then 1000. The faster the speed, the more light the film needs to expose, because it is opening quickly and less light has a chance to hit the film. For action shots, that you want crystal clear, you have to either a) buy a faster film (which in turn is grainier) b) add more light by choosing a different f stop, or c) have a fast shutter speed.

Does that make any sense? You'd be better off with a CKO answer....

Hey Ben, does it not have a green light that comes on when you are in the right area? Is it a Pentax? I know the old ME Super's operated that way!

My camera has an auto mode that changes the shutter speed depending on the f-stop, sounds like that's what this camera is doing. If you 'know what you're doing' I'd stay away from a camera that doesn't offer full manual control. As far as the shutter speeds go, if you're shooting skiing on sunny days keep it at 1/500 or 1/1000 (or higher) and 50 or 100 ISO film. Hope that helps.

^ hahahha yea i know dude, i shoot for canon and the i.s.f, skiboardings on the downlow, but im having fun going places for free and shooting photos so im not complaining. And i think you guys missed the point of my post, yea i understand what shutter speed does. Its just my light meter is composed of different shutter speed numbers, i was wondering what number should be highlighted for a well rounded shot, because when you change the fstop a different shutterspeed is highlighted depending on which way you turn it.

Put it on the highest f-stop... if it's a 50mm lens I'd guess it's like a f1.8 or 1.9 or something... or if you want a little more to be in focus, put it on around f7 or something. But I don't know anything about the camera so... play with it!

hey guys i just did shot some portraits yesterday, got my pics back, and they all came out perfect, shot em on 125, and they were beautiful, i'll post some if i get a chance, thanks for the help,

Is Neal Lyons still riding for Canon, or has he switched to skis now? He said about three years ago that Canon were going to go into ski production too, I guess nothing really came of it. And do you know what Brinton Gunderson is doing these days? Skiing? Skiboarding? Snakeboarding? I know he was with Groove, not Canon.

And photography question for guys who have replied here - is a circular polarizer with getting for snow shots? I film, (Canon GL1), but it should still apply.

Hes not riding much anymore but we still hang out a bunch, as for brinton, hes dealing with 3 big snakeboard companies he owns, and is still finding time to skiboard, im going to utah this year for a shoot with him,

yea this is ben.

Snakeboarding is a board that your connected to with bindings, and you create momentum by swivvling your feet back and forth (like a snake) some cats like brinton are top of there game, throwing rodeo 900's and doing huge huge handrails on these things, some good streetboard flicks are shadowmonkeys and fish
