Lifting and Skiing

At my gym Ive been having an ongoing discussion with a trainer over lifting for "extreme" sports especially skiing. He said the main thing you can do is build a strong core and legs. ALso adding swingwieght can be important for big spins. I found this to be almsot self explanatory. However he said that lunges, sqauting and repeated jumping excerises can efect your performance greatly in some cases. Anyone else looked into this

it just goes without saying that the amount of physical endurance, energy, ability and strentgh is def. going to impact your skiing in a positive way. think about how easily you wear out the first couple days back on the hill in the fall (if you haven't been working out). I did a lot of cardio stuff to prepare for this season, it wasn't enough, but it sure has helped.

wow. i was just talking about lifting in the Steroids thread. Yeah... i got a free 30 day thing for a gym near my house, and went a few days a week for like 45. mins. and i feel great. I shoulda signed up for weightlifting at school. Its so important to develop muscle around your knees, shoulders, others joints/ligaments that get worked skiing. And i did a lot of lower back stuff. Do it.

If you are skiing park I wouldn't worry about being "jacked". But if you race and ski big mountain being able to squat a bear will probably help you hold onto those 50mph crud turns and flexing those metal skis and stiff ass boots. I suppose a strong core could help for park.

when you get older it especially helps out. i've been skiing park for 13-14 years (yes, it existed back then) with a close friend. We're now 25/26 and I hit up the gym religiously while he does jack shit. During the past 3 years he's busted his collar bone, ripped basically every ligament in his shoulder, and recently tore his ACL and might not be able to ski hard ever again.

I still believe to this day that if he kept in shape, continued to stretch, and strengthened his muscles the injuries would have not been so severe.

In an NS radio interview, Eric Pollard stated that he doesn't ever work out because everyone he knows that works out hard ends up getting injured.

its important to weightlift if you ski because you have to beat up all the other gangsters on the mountain

you want a strong core for airs. a stronger core means faster/better controlled spins, corks, etc. you wnat strong legs so you can last all day, prevent injury, and hopefuly get a little more pop.

I found that i had much more endurance when skiing in the back country on those long runs. but other than that it didnt really affect my park skiing. i just did alot of stretching and yoga

Exercising in anyway will benefit you. It allows you to go faster for longer and reduces the risks of injuries. It's pretty common sense for any sport.

Weightlifting could be very beneficial, but it could hurt if you gain the wrong type of muscle mass by slowing you down. Well maintained muscles will be more flexible and allow for more controlled and better spins, and will resist injury much better.

Oh, and this thread goes a while back!

word^, i do squats, leg curls, leg press, and this one thing i do which i guess is supposed to be real good for performance. have an object, like a bench, and jump on it going to both sides of it acting like your turning, then jump back on and go to the other side.

Don't agree with me just because you're local...

That said, I don't lift. I just do physical activities that help keep me in shae. I XC MTB 4 times a week.
