Would be a cool job, im thinking about getting on a maintenance crew with a ski area, but next season im doing snowmaking. The lift mechanics at my local mtn work year round and do the most work over the summer, during the winter they just kinda sit around till something breaks. Im not sure if welding is a requirement but if you can weld then that will be very helpful.. pay probably isnt extremely well or extremely bad, it depends on where you are. They typically arrive an hour or two before opening and leave an hour or two after closing. This is just from my observations from working in the lift department this past season.

My brother does it and he seems to like it. The pay depends on where you are at. Id say starting is between $12-$16 depending on the resort. Most work is done in the off season and in the winter it is mostly just waiting for things to break. Depending on the resort you can do some skiing while you are waiting for stuff to break as long as there is another person to fix stuff if you happen to be on the lift. You get there an hour or two before opening and then probably an hour after close you leave, unless you have night skiing then there is probably two shifts.

God I would hate to be responsible for getting the lift running again with a big load of people on one of those things after a breakdown. Seems nerve-racking.

The pay I get is pretty shit for a trades job but lots of stuff makes up for it. I work the night shift (2:30-12:30) so I get to ski any day/morning I want. Lift downtime can be a little stressful but I find it motivates me to work faster. Its also really nice to do a lot of your actual work in the mountains. I wouldn't recommend it unless you like working with your hands and don't mind heights or getting wet though.
